Chapter 1 of 31 - The new house

"We're here!" cried Jade. "No!" Lucy chorused. Jade and Lucy were twins. Two very different twins. Jade had short black hair and brown eyes and was more of an enthusiastic 12-year-old than a dainty, timid and shy blonde like Lucy. Their family had just moved into a new house, called Elvis Manor in Maple Pine Neighborhood, Florida. Jade was quite excited, but Lucy was reluctant. The realtor, Mrs.Knight, had said the house was rumored to be haunted by an old woman's ghost. "A 24-year-old woman called Ella lived here in 1886. She was selfish and didn't care for anyone. Her parents had died when she was a baby and her aunt had abandoned her." she had said. "When Ella died of old age in 1970, her body was buried in many different graveyards, but life around the graveyards where she was buried wasn't very pleasant. Finally, she was buried a few miles away from the backyard of the manor," Lucy hated all sorts of haunted households, and most of all, ghosts. But Jade liked hearing scary stories and was rather adventurous. Their parents hadn't believed in the story, but they made a big mistake doing so. Of course, they bought the mansion, which had four bedrooms, (a bathroom in each of them), a kitchen, a gazebo, a turret, a living room, a laundry, and a lounge room. There was also a dumbwaiter, leading to an attic where no one had been in for years. "Okay kiddos, let's start unpacking," said Mrs.Jones. The moving truck was parked behind them, so they and some workers began to carry boxes of things to the house's porch. "Lucy! Come out of the car! You can't stay in there forever!" said Jade, cheerfully. "No," Lucy indignantly refused. "Honey, there is nothing to be afraid of. Just come out and explore the house with your sister," said Mr.Jones, who was busy carrying a box of clothes. Lucy stuck her lower lip out and reluctantly came outside. "Girls, go and pick your bedrooms. There are four," said Mrs.Jones. This time Lucy stopped pouting. She loved making her room fancy and cute. The pair ran upstairs. "This must be the master bedroom," said Jade, when they entered a huge room with a closet. "Let's check out the other rooms," Lucy suggested. Finally, they chose rooms for themselves, Lucy's room was baby pink and white, while Jade's was purple and a plaid white. After a long 6 hours, the house was finally set up perfectly, although the attic was still not discovered. During dinner: "Mum, is there an attic?" asked Lucy, who only wanted to know. "Yes, hon, if you climb the dumbwaiter, it leads to the attic." Mrs.Jones answered. "I didn't know a dumb waiter worked here?" Jade joked. She knew what a dumbwaiter was. Lucy widened her eyes. Mr.Jones rolled his eyes and said, "Girls, a dumbwaiter is a little lift used to carry people or food to upper or lower floors in the olden days," "No wonder it's called a dumbwaiter! It's dumb, get it?" Jade joked once more. Mr. and Mrs.Jones cracked up at their daughter. Only Lucy remained subdued. "Mum, are you sure there aren't any ghosts in the attic?" she asked. "Lucy, ghosts aren't real. And there are no ghosts in this house," Mr.Jones said, seriously. "It would be quite interesting if there were any," Jade joked. (again) "Jade, stop teasing your sister. And if you've finished your dinner just leave the plates in the dish bucket over there. No need to wash," "Okay, mum." Lucy and Jade chorused. That night, Lucy crept into Jade's room and asked her, "Jade, are you sure there aren't any ghosts in here?" "No, Hunny! No ghosts at all! Ella is just a myth! Now go to sleep. I need to be early to play some tennis tomorrow." Jade reassured her sister, who crept back into her room. However, Jade was quite wrong. Oh, Jade! You don't know this house yet!
