Chapter 1 of 8 - First Day

I walked through the main office into the cafeteria. I walked to the neon sign that said: 9th. I was handed my schedule and quickly skimmed through it. Band was first. I scanned the cafeteria looking for someone to sit with. I saw a lonely girl, with long brown hair wearing a dark ankle deep skirt. She was reading something, I couldn't tell what it was. I decided to sit with her. There was no need for introduction, we both went to school for as long as we could remember. "Hi E." I said. "How was your summer?" She looked up from her book and shrugged. "Could be better." It was quiet, for two people. No one was really sitting with us, I quietly wished my friend Carrie was here. We looked through each of our schedules to see what classes we had together. Algebra I. I shuddered, I never was good at math. Soon enough, it was time to go to class. I walked out of the back door, with my saxaphone in hand, and my binders and schedule in the other. I kicked the door opened and walked to the small building in front of the middle school. I set my stuff down next to the door, band wasn't popular. I looked around the room and saw my classmates. I counted the freshman, then the sophomores, juniors, and seniors. My jaw dropped. Three freshman, one sophomore, and three juniors. I couldn't believe it. Last year, there was at least twenty high schoolers in the high school band. I quietly sank in my seat, scrutinizing my classmates. We were handed a syllabus, and lectured on rules. I leaned back in my chair already snoozing. Why is the first day always the hardest? When school was finally over, I had to sign four different papers saying I would turn in my stupid homework on time, and follow the rules, and follow the dress code. "How was school?" my mom asked as I sat down in the passenger seat. "Boring." I said as I leaned back in my seat. My mom was planning on asking me something, my phone vibrated. It was my friend, Carrie. "Hey Carrie." I said cheerfully. "How was it?" I stopped, Carrie was crying. "What's wrong?" I asked. "Abs..." she said. "I don't like it here. I want to go back. No one wants to be friends with me, I feel so lonely." I felt my heart get caught up in my throat. "I'm sorry I'm not there." I said softly. "I want to go back to my old school." My mom pulled in the junior high parking lot and picked up my brother. "Things are going to get better." I said softly. "You're going to make friends, and I'm always here for you if you don't." "Can I call you tomorrow?" "Yes, of course." I said. "We're friends, friends are always there for each other."
