10 year old Captain Ginger was raised in a clock shop. He isn't exactly sure who his parents are, but is determined to find them with his mysterious family heirloom that he calls a coat and the help of his friends.
Captain Ginger is the one with curly red hair with a sailor's hat and suit. Tommy is the one with brown hair, a big green camping backpack and a green beret to match.
This is how they met: Tommy was walking alone on the empty street of Whallabeck City, currently passing the Whallabeck Bakery. Captain Ginger looked to his right and noticed Tommy, so Ginger approached him, zipping up his woven coat of cockroach antennae even though it was the middle of summer.
“Hey kid,” Said Ginger, who is a kid. “I'm Captain Ginger, 10 ½ year-old coat sailor at your service,” Tommy's brows furrowed as he looked Captain Ginger up and down, up and down.
“Where did you get your coat?” Tommy asked.
“Why, from the finest clockmaker around: Quintus Thecklebottom, who's also my dad! It's made of woven cockroach antennae!” Ginger exclaimed.
Tommy pointed out, “But… Quintus is a clockmaker! Doesn't he like, make clocks?”
Captain Ginger shrugged and replied, “he can do many things.”
“Should we have something to eat?” Tommy suggested.
“Sure,” Captain Ginger replied.
Ginger and Tommy ate their walnut shell cupcakes in silence.
“Ooh I like how the strawberry buttercream compliments the delicate hint-of-lime flavor- and OH! A sprinkle surprise in the center! How Lovely!” Said Ginger happily. Tommy nodded and ordered another walnut shell cupcake, honey and lavender flavored like Captain Ginger suggested.
After Captain Ginger and Tommy has finished dessert before lunch, they went to Ginger's tree house. Tommy gazed at the tall, thick oak tree with Captain Ginger's house on top, painted with every color of the rainbow in glorious different patterns. Ginger pointed to the rope ladder leading up to his tree house. Tommy swiveled around on the ladder, and his hands began to sweat. Finger by finger, Tommy's hand slipped until he was dangling on one hand. Ginger reached down from the top floor of the tree house for Tommy's loose hand.
“Help! Please, Captain!” Tommy cried. He wiggled around so that the tip of his leather boot caught on the ladder for support. He reached up and grasped Ginger's hand. Ginger clutched onto Tommy's arm in return with his other hand and pulled Tommy up. Tommy looked at Captain Ginger's evergreen bedding, mushroom garden, tiny kitchen and table with gingham tablecloth. And there was also a door.
“Hey Tommy! Wanna see something?” Said Ginger.
“Ok,” Tommy replied. Ginger lead him to the door. Behind the door was a room (obviously) covered in sawdust, and inside the room was a wooden boat with neon sails tucked at it's sides, like wings. At the bow of the boat was a big, bright yellow star to guide people through dark nights. The top deck of the boat had three chairs and one in front of a steering wheel. On the side of the boat, the phrase “coat ←” was carved. There was also a bottom deck, but Ginger admitted he had never went down before.
“This is the coat I'm going to sail someday. It's a family heirloom. I have a mission, too and I think this coat might come in handy during the mission,” Said Ginger.
“What's your mission?” Tommy asked.
“To find my family! Quintus isn't my real dad,” Ginger replied.
“Guess what?”
“Wha-”
“That was a rhetorical question. So guess what? I know where the mission will begin, but that's all I know about the mission so I hope you happen to know some stuff about it,” Ginger looked Tommy in the eye.
“I don't,” Said Tommy.
“Then I guess we should go to the clock shop and figure things out from there,” Captain Ginger suggested.
“How do you know we need to go to the clock shop?” Tommy asked.
“Well, 'cause that's where Quintus said he found me,” Said Ginger, grabbing his coat of woven cockroach antennae.
