It has been four months since Skylar has found her friend, McKenzie. She has tried her best to support McKenzie's PTSD, but their friendship hasn't been the same. McKenzie is distant, she's not invited to sleepovers, and McKenzie can't sleep inside her own house. Nevertheless, Skylar is looking forward to the summer; no school, no pressure, free at last. That is, until Skylar answers another knock on her door. It's the FBI again, it turns out, Skylar didn't find the leader of the SHAP. McKenzie and Skylar have to go into witness protection, for how long? They don't know.
Once the Director FINALLY pulled the car over, Skylar found herself staring at a big brown building. McKenzie stepped out to rubbing her eyes. They followed the Director in without saying a word. He walked through a series of hallways. He stopped and opened the door for Skylar and McKenzie, they both stepped in and saw two women in waiting for them.
"Skylar, McKenzie, this is Erin, and Kelly."
Skylar shook her hand, feeling a lump in her throat, she was too nervous to say anything.
"Erin is providing you with your cover, and your new identity, and Kelly is going to be disguising you."
"Disguising us?" McKenzie asked.
"We'll be changing your hair, and clothes." Kelly answered.
"Sit down, both of you." Erin said politely.
Skylar and McKenzie stared at each other, before they sat in the two barber chairs.
"What length would you like?" She asked as she reached for a pair of sissors.
"Anything is fine," Skylar said, "Just don't make me look like a boy."
Skylar took off her glasses, closing her eyes, she wished she was dreaming, she wished she would wake up now and be in the safety of her own house in her own bed. But no matter how hard she would try, this was real this was happening, someone was out to kill her, and she couldn't help but feel scared. She opened her eyes and saw her new hair cut, it just touched the shoulders, short enough for a ponytail, she smiled softly.
"What color?" She asked.
"What?"
"What color dye do you want?" Kelly asked. "For your hair?"
"Does it have to be dyed?"
"You were in the news for a long time, changing the color would help disguise you from anyone recognizing you."
Skylar thought about it for a minute.
"We have brown, black, blonde, red, purple, pink, blue."
Skylar sighed, staring at her short brown hair. "Blonde?" She asked.
"Are you sure?"
"No." Skylar said. "I just know it can't be black, or red... or brown."
"Okay, I'm getting it ready, do want anything else with it?"
"Maybe some purple, on the bottom?"
"Okay," I'll get that done.
When Skylar's hair was done, all she could do was stare. Her red framed glasses, didn't seem to match with this new identity.
"Oh yeah, almost forgot."
Erin took Skylar's glasses off her face and handed her another pair. Skylar stared at the new pair, then put them on. Her new blond hair, with a purple streak down the sides, her new black framed glasses. She looked like another version of herself. Skylar frowned thinking what was going to happen this summer. Soon enough McKenzie was done, she had blonde hair too, with a red streak down the side of her hair.
Five minutes later they were handed IDs. "Your names are Scarlett and Mckalya Gaines. You're sisters, and are living in your foster home in Knoweare Texas."
"Knowhere?" I asked.
"Knoweare." Erin explained. "It's a small town, the population is less than 500, you should be secure there."
Skylar nodded then turned around and saw Chris White and the Director.
"We're leaving?" McKenzie asked.
"Yes." The Director said, "Next stop Knoweare."
