Aphra has just moved to Redwood, California from Florida. She is new and needs to make new friends. However, sometimes things are harder without her dad around.
At school, Aphra aced the curl-ups test, with eighty-five. She played soccer at recess with Mia. She became best friends with Rosie, who helped her when soccer piled up, or when she missed her dad. Justin raised her spirits.
And then she came home one day.
"Happy birthday Aphra! It's May 2nd already!" exclaimed Aphra's mom.
"HHHH! WOW!"
"For your birthday, I will let you get a pet. Any pet. But honey, we can't get rats or a snake, I'm sorry, but we talked about this already."
"Oh,"
"So, what do you want?"
"Well," She couldn't get the only pets she wanted? Ugh. "What about... we go the pet store and see what's there?"
So Aphra's mom drove her to the pet store.
Aphra gazed at the expensive chameleons, the fish, the hamsters, the chinchillas... then she wandered over to the adoption event. There were so many cats.
And then, Aphra spotted a woman. A woman, holding a carrier. It peeped. Aphra walked over.
"Hi! Would you like to hold one?"
"Mew! Mew!" Went the cage.
Aphra nodded. The woman opened the crate to reveal two tiny kittens; so small they hadn't been neutered yet. Aphra picked one up from the woman's hands. The creature fit perfectly in her arms, and it was warm as the summer sun. It purred.
"Wow, Aphra. I certainly wouldn't mind adopting both." said Aphra's mom approvingly.
The woman smiled. "A lot of people want them."
"I want them." Aphra decided.
"Can we?"
"Yes." The woman handed Aphra's mom papers to sign.
"Aphra, you can think of names for them."
Yes! What should Aphra name her new boy kittens?
