Chapter 11 of 11 - Supper

The car ride was short, and quiet. "What did you tell them?" Chris asked. "We told them that we are foster kids." I said. "And?" "Our parents are unable to take care of at the moment because of a home invasion that forced us into human trafficking." I said quickly. He slowed the car down. "What?" "We said we were victims of human trafficking and the investigation is ongoing. We said the FBI placed into foster care until the investigation is closed." He stopped the car thinking for a moment. "Okay." he said. "Are we in trouble?" McKenzie asked. "You're not in trouble." Chris said. We breathed a sigh of relief. "We do need to have conversation about your cover story again. It's clear that we didn't talk about it as much as we should have." I nodded. "Are they coming by for supper?" I asked. He put the car back in gear and made his way back in the house. "That's up to them." He said. "They stop by a few times." Soon enough we pulled in the driveway and stepped in the house. Claire was setting the table, and Anna was stirring a pot in the stove. "Look Daddy, I'm a chef." "Yes you are!" he said. I marched up stairs and quickly took a shower, when I got back in my room. I emptied my backpack and felt my heart drop, the book I brought with me was gone. I checked in all the pockets, I couldn't find it. "Scarlett!" Claire yelled. "Supper's ready!" "Just a minute!" I dug through the backpack over and over, but I couldn't find the book. "It's getting cold!" "Just a minute!" I yelled. I gave up and started getting dressed. As I was pulling my pants up, someone knocked on my door. "I'll be there in a minute!" I said. I put on a shirt and opened the door, I leaned back suprised. "Alex?" "Right." he said. "you forgot your book." He handed it to me. "Carol Fisher?" "Yep." I said. "She's my favorite." "She's one of my favorite too." I stopped for a moment, none of my other friends really enjoyed reading as much as I do. "Oh my gosh." I said. "Really?" "Yeah." he said. "My favorite is the series where her best friend is missing and the main character looks for clues to try and find her." "Yeah..." I said. I turned around and tossed the book on the bed and grabbed my hoodie. "Are you having dinner with us?" I asked. He shrugged. "I'll take that as a yes." "Scarlett!" "I'm coming."
