Kayla is a nameless orphan, who is being ill-treated by her foster family. She runs away, only to fall in the hands of other foster families, who treat her worse than ever. Kayla soon discovers she has a half-older sister, who betrayed her, but lived a life of misery. Kayla can't do anything but save Karen, or worse, become a slave.

Basically this whole story takes place in Calgary, Canada.
Kayla: long black hair, dark brown eyes, ivory pale skin. 12 years old (13 on 18 February) She is kind, adventurous and brave.
Serena: long black hair (in a ponytail), hazel eyes, light skin. 13 years old (14 on 24 June) She is a responsible, caring sister.
Sally: caramel brown hair, blue eyes, light skin. 11 years old (12 on 4 December) She is kind, smart and sporty.
Kelly: blond hair, blue eyes, light skin. 4 years old (5 on 9 May). Is a cute, cheerful and fun girl.
Karen: long black hair (like Kayla's), brown eyes, ivory pale skin. 23 years old (24 on 17 July). Is confident, kind and pretty.
The Bitermanns all have brown hair and green eyes and are a mean-spirited family.
The squad of Kayla, Serena, Sally and Kelly are going to go to Calgary North School, while Karen is going to go to a college for a few more years.
Kayla and Karen are now officially Marrons. Kayla Johnson-Marron and Karen Johnson-Marron.
