Kayla is a nameless orphan, who is being ill-treated by her foster family. She runs away, only to fall in the hands of other foster families, who treat her worse than ever. Kayla soon discovers she has a half-older sister, who betrayed her, but lived a life of misery. Kayla can't do anything but save Karen, or worse, become a slave.
I was locked in a room for hours. It felt like forever. When were the others going to come back?
Just then, I heard a noise.
"Kayla?!" I looked up. KAREN!
"Kayla! My- my sister?!"
"You're my sister, aren't you?" I said.
Karen sighed. "Yes, I am. Our parents abandoned me when I was still in college. And- you might know that, because I saw you steal the adoption papers,"
"Is that why Ms.Vicky wants me?"
"I think so. I don't know. Or maybe she doesn't recognize you. Ms.Vicky used to be an old friend of our parents. Of course, she got betrayed by them too,"
"Wow, our parents are that bad? They betrayed a criminal who would later abuse their children,"
"I know!" cried Karen. "Who are those other girls, Serena and Sally? And Kelly?"
"Well, you know how I used to live with the Bitermanns. I ran away one night and Ms.Vicky found me. She took me to the orphanage and it was horrible so I ran away again. Then Mr.Marron found me. He is Serena, Sally and Kelly's dad. He took me to their home and I'm officially a Marron now. Kayla Marron. Kayla Johnson-Marron. Sounds good, right? Anyway, we didn't like Kelly so we threw her down the river. We felt guilty so we went to look for her and then Ms.Vicky found us and kidnapped us and took us back to the orphanage. It's a pretty long story after that, how Kelly was found, etc. But that's what happened, what about you?"
I caught my breath. That was a lot to say in 30 seconds.
Karen began her story. "I left college because I wanted to meet our parents one last time. They had written a letter to me that they were going to move to Canada and I had to come to their house before they left. I went to visit them, but realized they abandoned us. I found you and went to the police station. The Bitermanns adopted you and Ms.Vicky adopted me. However, we never found you again, because the Bitermanns secretly adopted you while we were fixing things with me. I've lived here for years now, it's been horrible. I wondered what happened to you. But now, I think we're safe. We'll run away together, Serena, Sally and Kelly are waiting outside. Then we can go back to the Marrons and find the police. They'll arrest Ms.Vicky for child abuse and we'll all live happily ever after,"
That sounded good. And wow, our parents really abandoned us both? I didn't remember a single thing about it when I was younger. Ah well, you can't remember everything.
Karen and I ran downstairs without being seen and saw that Serena, Sally and Kelly were waiting for us down there.
"What took you so long?" Serena cried. "Hop in!"
We were just about to take off, when Ms.Vicky and her orphans came outside.
"COME BACK HERE!" She shouted. "KAYLA! KAREN! COME BACK HERE!"
We weren't listening. We began driving fast.
Ms.Vicky, meanwhile, got into an ugly purple jeep (probably stolen) with Faith, Sienna and Amy-Allen and they all took off after us.
"Oh no, they're following us! Drive faster!" Sally cried.
"I can't hold on!" Kelly cried. "You're going too fast!"
"Well, we're going past a rocky road now, so hold on super tight, Kelly," Serena said, fearfully.
The road was bumpy. It decreased our speed, but the jeep behind us was going slow too.
We finally went on the smooth road and Karen took the wheel, as she was more of a professional driver.
She went fast.
But the jeep was gaining on us.
Suddenly, we turned and came to a dead end.
"OH NO! A DEAD END!" Serena shouted.
The jeep had stopped behind us.
"COME OUT NOW YOU FIVE!" Ms.Vicky shouted.
"NEVER!" Karen shouted back and we turned and sped out of there.
"Are they still following us?"
I looked back. Yes, they were still following us!
"OH NOO!" cried Sally.
"What is it?!" I turned and saw we had dropped Kelly!
The jeep stopped next to Kelly and Faith picked her up.
"HELP!!" Kelly cried.
Faith dumped her into the jeep and got in.
"NOO~! GIVE KELLY BACK!" Serena cried.
"Bye-bye girls, we've got places to go," Ms.Vicky said and she sped off.
