Zuzanna Kowalski is living through history! She used to be a normal 14 year old girl living in Warsaw, Poland. But ever since the German soldiers attacked her town, things aren't the same. Her parents were shipped off the concentration camps, so it's just Zuzanna. She meets secret societies, soldiers, traitors, prisoners, kids just like her, and so much more! Can Zuzanna fight, or will the soldiers destroy her?
Zuzanna Kowalski sat in the corner of her home. Her home might be a tiny one, but it meant safety and comfort to her. She heard footsteps. She heard whispers in German. 'Oh no,' Zuzanna thought to herself. She was fluent in Polish, English, and German. "I'll go in the first apartment, you in the second," The soldiers whispered. Zuzanna had no choice. She looked out the window, it was a pretty far jump. But, she did it. She landed hard, but she saw some people in German uniforms as soon as she hit the ground.
"Freeze!" One yelled.
Zuzanna just ran. She heard gunshots, and she saw bullets near her head.
"Stop, please!" She shrieked, but they didn't.
Then, Zuzanna saw a building with a door open. She hid behind a bush first, then she ran into the building. She ran up the stairs, panting by the time she had reached the top. Then she saw a girl that looked about her age. She had very, very short hair that was blondish brownish. She was wearing dirty tan clothes that had rips in them, and she had tears in her eyes.
"Hi," Zuzanna whispered to the girl, touching her shoulder.
"Ah! Don't kill me!" The girl yelled back.
"Shh! Soldiers are coming up here, we HAVE to hide!"
"O-okay. But where?"
"Umm, is there a trap door?"
"No."
"Are there vents?"
"Yes!"
"Quickly now, come on!"
The girl and Zuzanna rapidly ran to the vents and went in as quickly as possible. The girl started breathing VERY heavily.
"Quiet!" Zuzanna whispered.
"Okay."
"Did you hear something?" A deep voice said in German.
"I thought I did," said another voice.
"I swear I saw that little girl run up here!"
"Look EVERYWHERE. We are not letting her getaway. She may be part of one of those stupid societies."
The two soldiers looked for a while, and the girls held their breaths. Finally, they heard the footsteps gradually fade. They looked around first, then hopped out of the vent.
"We have to go out using the window. It is too risky, they could be at the door waiting for us," Zuzanna whispered.
"O-okay," The girl stammered.
"Three, two, one, jump!"
THUD!
Then, both of them felt a hand on their shoulders.
