Chapter 1 of 9 - Morning

"BRRRRRING! BRRRRRRING!"I flip over, feeling around for the button that switches off my alarm clock. "Click!" I slowly crawl out of bed. I check my calendar. Friday, Nov 17, 2017. Hey! It's the seventeenth and the year is 2017! Maybe I'll have good luck today. I do a body check. It feels like my lips have turned into a desert. I put on five layers of chapstick before turning toward my mirror. Now to do something about the black mess I have for hair…I settle for taking two sparkly pink ribbons out of my neatly organized dresser and I try to braid them into my hair. It actually looks okay, and I silently congratulate myself. “Kayla, breakfast!” my twenty-year-old brother, Liam, calls. I run from my small attic bedroom, downstairs, and into the kitchen that doubles as a dining room. I call it the “dining kitchen.” As I rush into the dining kitchen, I almost crash into my five-year-old brother, David, who is drinking orange juice. “Where's mom?” I ask, concerned. “Mom's at work,” Liam says. Last night, I got up to get a drink of water, and she was still awake. It was 4 a.m. Well, she still has to work. We don't want to starve to death. I just don't want her to be tired. My aunts and uncles already supply our housing and schooling. We live on both the fourth story and also in the attic, of my uncle Sanjit and my aunt Tess's mansion.
