This is the story of a girl named Ember, who doesn't have a very good relationship with her parents. She feels like nobody wants her anymore. Can she beat the sadness and be happy again, or will the fire burn out making her just an ember flickering in the darkness?
The world whirrs around me, mushing into a big mess. I hear people shouting from below me. Is this it? When I hit the ground, will my life finally be over? I stare into the sun, blazing above me, which soon, will no longer be able to brighten up my life.
Darkness will be the only sense I'll know.
But wait, is this really how I want to die? Everyone watching in horror, as a girl falls from the sky, then dies when she lands. I think I've made a wrong decision. But I can't go back now, I'm not like the woodpecker, I don't have wings.
Then I hear something, something that I didn't think I would be relieved to hear, the sirens of an ambulance. The cries are getting louder, not long now.
"Quick! Get the stretcher!" A man yells.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see something white. A rectangle shape is being thrown towards me. The crowds are putting it directly below me.
Thump.
I land on my back, on something squishy. Am I saved?
I wake up to beeping of machines and a very sore neck. I'm at hospital. A doctor comes into the room and says "Ah, Ember I see you've woken up! How are you feeling?"
"My neck hurts"
"Oh, that'll be the whiplash you got when you hit the mattress." He replies.
"Oh. It was a mattress. I didn't see it properly."
"Yes it was.. Uh now you better get some sleep before your parents arrive, alright".
Oh no. Mum's going to be furious. And I just want to see Bria, and Wink.
Mum and dad came in crying and immediately hugged me as soon as they saw me.
"Not too tight, she has injuries." The doctor says in his monotone voice.
"Oh Ember! We were so worried! If someone hadn't called the ambulance god knows what would've happened!" Mum says, completely ignoring the doctor.
"I'm sorry, mum. I've been so stupid."
Then the doctor ushers them out of the room like they're paparazzi.
I'm in the hospital bed for a week and the monotone doctor, called Dr Harrock comes in the room and says I can go out into the hospital garden for some fresh air. But I'd have to be in a wheelchair because my legs were sprained badly.
"Oh and Ember, there's a visitor for you, too". He smiles, for the first time. Then he wheels me out into the garden and lifts me onto the bench.
"She'll be here in a minute". He leaves me in the garden.
The smell of flowers and the buzz of bees reminds me, that even the small things in life, are worth witnessing. I close my eyes and think about how I'm so lucky, to be noticed by those people, and be saved. Just because they care, about me.
"Hi Em, what drastic thing did you do this time?" Bria walks up to me and smiles.
"Bria! I missed you!" I say as she hugs me. "I'm so sorry, I've been so silly, and you weren't even aware." I stare at the grass.
"I wasn't, but I'll always be there for you Ember. Always."
"But I've never been there for you, I've been so selfish haven't I."
"Let's not think about that anymore, let's put it behind us and start a new chapter. When you come out of hospital, we will have the best time ever."
"Yes. We will." I agree. She hugs me once more then turns to leave.
"Uhh, Bria!"
"Yes?"
"Thanks" Then she leaves.
I look up to the sun, and it reminds me, if the sun dies, we'd all die. Everyone is loved by someone, and I must remember that. A woodpecker swoops down from the sky, and sits on the edge of the bench, tilting its head, and staring into my eyes.
The End
