Chapter 1 of 3 - Intro!

October 31, 2020 Monday Hi guys! This is Rachel Willows! And this is my diary! I thought I would start one because... I don't know, I felt I had to? Or maybe it's because we're moving to a place called Menchkine Falls day after tomorrow. I'm incredibly EXCITED!! I know I should be sad 'cause I'm leaving my friends behind. But somehow, I'm not feeling bad. That's because I don't have any besties at school. Yeah, I'm nice and all, and people like me. But I don't have BEST friends. I'm a kind of everyone-likes-but-nobody-loves kid. Maria accepted to come to the mall with me today, but didn't buy the 'best friends forever' necklace I bought her. So, you get it. I wouldn't have asked Maria to come if it weren't for Dad. He's the one who says I should get more friends and pushes me out to have fun. But I guess I don't like that very much, even though he means it genially. I don't like Dad ruffling my hair, or giving me that green shirt which he says matches my hair. But I love my Dad, and I know he thinks I like him when he does those things. And I tell him that I do. But it's really very annoying to wear that green, faded shirt with “I love school” written on the front to school. Dad runs the bakery just opposite to our house. It's small, but it's nice. I go there to help Dad very often. We make homemade bread there, and that's very popular with everyone. The smell of the baking bread attracts all the kids from their homes and I sneak them a few fluffy bits once in a while. It's stifling warm in the bakery while we're baking, and people come and chat with us for a few minutes before they go back to their busy lives. I think our bakery is what I'm gonna miss the most. There are some questions my classmates ask me often. The most asked one is “Where's your mother?”. The answer I give is “Abroad.”. If they ask for the country, I slink off quietly. Why? Because I don't know! Dad has told me is that she's abroad. But there's a secret. My Mom is working for the ITSP, the International Top Secret Police! And me and Dad are the only people in the country who know! Me and Dad are the normal, poor, kind, bakery-running locals. But Mom is a hero who works in the biggest organisation in the world! Weird right? Mom isn't even supposed to send us money, because people can track her using the mailbox she sent through! But now there are smartphones, why not send us money through that? It might be because we only have a battered old telephone at home. Yup, we're extremely poor. But we're happy. And that's the only thing we need to live. And yeah, we move tomorrow.
