Liliana lives in a small, isolated home in the middle of an abandoned forest. Her family has made their own clothes, grown their own food, and made their own essentials for the last 20 years. One day, Liliana's parents go missing and she is forced to face the supernatural force she awakened when reading an old leather back book in the basement. Can she do this all alone?
I woke with a start, my handmade quilt falling down my chest. Breathing heavily, I looked around and saw the book. It fell off my nightstand. I sighed and picked it up, then got out of bed. The wooden floors were freezing on my bare feet. I walked across the plain room to the kitchen sink. It is awful living in a 3 room house. The bathroom in one room, the kitchen, table, and my bedroom in another, and the sitting room and my parents in the last.
My parents...It's been three days since the book finding and two days since the disappearance. And it's been one day since the first disturbance.
I shook my head, wanting to clear those thoughts, but I couldn't. They replayed through my mind like a broken record. I grabbed the pail sitting underneath the bucket and picked it up silently. With just as much stealth, I walked from the house and to the freshwater stream only twenty feet away.
I filled the bucket and took it to the small tub my family uses to bathe. I slipped out of my simple gown and got into the water which I smelt of mint. My mother used mint when she made the soap. Would I ever see her again? My mind wondered. Would she ever be able to sing me to sleep again? Tears came down my face and I got out of the bath.
In the kitchen, I grabbed a small piece of bread and ate my breakfast. I lay down on my parents' bed, inhaling the sweet scent of mint, honeysuckle, and pine needles. Soon I started singing to sleep, singing a lullaby as my mother did.
