Alex Redd has strange powers to stop time, move things with her mind, and look into the past. When a hooded figure brings her to a world called Vortex where mythical creatures and people like her live, she finds a girl named Raie Streak who has the fire curse--when Alex has the ice curse. But when a group of people use their powers for evil, Alex knows that she and her friends must stop them. Will our hero survive? Or will she have to meet her fate?
Alex Redd groaned as she stared at the social studies test on the table in front of her. The whole thirty minutes of test time, she looked at it blankly, not even bothering to pick up her pencil.
She knew she didn't have to.
Right when the teacher said "And-" He couldn't finish his sentence. He stared at the back wall as still as a statue. So did everyone else. These time freezing periods had, at first, been strange, but Alex had finally ending up practicing them. She mastered them. They were also easy not notice or forget. Alex picked up her pencil--before it was cold to the touch. She dropped the writing utensil and the frost that covered it disappeared. Alex hated this part--where everything she touched turned to ice. She tried again, but only to get the same result.
Alex picked up a pencil with her mind and it started scribbling the answers on her test without her thinking about it. She winced as every other pencil started doing flips in the air and writing math equations on the walls. Alex brought over an eraser to wipe out the math problems, but just then time unfroze.
"Time's up!" The teacher finished. Kids started stampeding out the door, and Mr. Blotts chased after them. "WAIT! YOU DIDN'T GET YOUR HOMEWORK!" Alex got her bag and exited the room before Mr. Blotts could ask why there were math equations on the walls. The route she usually took way deserted, and the birds chirped from their feeble or sturdy branches. The towering pine trees with the last bits of snow on the created shadows that covered up the small mammal on the ground. Alex took a deep breath, the chilly air making her shiver. An arrow caught her bag, and she jerked to a stop.
A black hooded figure stood in front of her, holding a bow and arrow, and a brown leather quiver hung to her back. The person made a "come" gesture, and it turned and walked away at a brisk pace. Alex took a step, then hesitated. Something felt off, but also familiar. The figure turned and made the gesture again, and then took off. Alex took a step, then stopped. Then she finally made her decision. She dropped her back to the gravel floor and sprinted after the hooded figure.
