Chloe stormed out of the restaurant and Michael followed.
“What's wrong?” Michael didn't have a clue.
“Can you explain this?!” Chloe pointed at the notification on his phone.
They were a little more than a meter apart, so Michael couldn't see what Chloe was trying to show him. Chloe was furious with what she read, and she wanted answers. Michael stepped forward so he could read, and when he did, his face was flushed.
“Chloe… I…”
“What? You what?!” Chloe was not having any of this.
“Listen, it's not what is seems. Clade tried to bribe me into it, but I denied.” His face was tense and white.
“Then why are you part of this? You're hurting the park!” Chloe shouted.
“What??” Michael's heart was skipping beat after beat. “I'm not trying to hurt the park! He told me he's just trying to get the park's details for an extension.”
“No, he is trying to take the park down, so they sell it to him!” Chloe was steaming.
“Chloe…”
“Call this stupid idea off or I am so done with you!” Chloe demanded.
“What?! I can't just call it off, Chloe!”
Across the street, a man in a black suit pulled out his phone and started filming them.
Chloe hit her fist on the pole next to her and started walking off with Michael's phone. “Well, find a way!”
Michael ran to catch up with her. He grabbed her arm and turned her around. “Listen it's not what it seems! He said he's goanna kill me if I tell anyone.”
“What? Why?” Chloe was still angry.
“I don't know. But I also don't want to find out what will happen if I tell the police.” Michael panted.
“If you don't do something, the whole zoo will be taken down.” Chloe snapped.
“I do what I can, but that's not much. You haven't seen a fleck of the size of his laboratory.” Michael explained, “He has gotten away with so many take-downs in the past, what is to say this won't be the same?”
“If you do something, it won't.” Chloe was breathing heavily.
Michael shook his head and ran his hair with his hand. Chloe walked away leaving Michael to himself. Michael got in his car and started the drive back to his hotel room. It was early morning by now.
Pearl and Jason waited for a while. When Chloe and Michael didn't come back, Jason got up to look after them.
“Chloe? Michael?” Jason shouted their names.
“They must have left to have some time together.” It was cold outside, and Pearl just wanted to be warm and get ready for work.
“No, something's wrong.”
Pearl tried texting Chloe, but she didn't answer. They decided to head back to the hotel.
A short time later, they were back.
“Chloe!” Pearl saw her sitting on her bed, looking at Michael's phone.
“What happened out there?” Jason asked.
Chloe read a text message off of Michael's phone. “Listen to this, 'Ok, Jess. I'll see you tonight at 10:00.' why was Jessica going to his place at 10:00 in the night?! This was months ago!”
Jason and Pearl froze with their mouths hanging.
“No meaningful past conversations and nothing after. Only a call.” Chloe was on the verge of tears.
No one moved.
Chloe fumed under her breath, “That guy is so dead.”
