Jason woke up to his phone buzzing. He didn't want to wake up Chloe, so he turned it off immediately. It was 4:00 am, and Jason wanted to have some time alone with Pearl. He shook her slightly to wake her up, and she moaned.
“No… don't.” Pearl mumbled, “Ralph, stop.”
Jason stopped for a second to figure out who Ralph was. He realized she was talking in her dream. He gave Pearl a kiss on her cheek and that woke her up.
“Who the— Jason?”
“C'mon it's 4:00.”
Pearl looked out of the window, “It's night outside.”
“Exactly. I didn't want to interrupt your work.” Jason said nonchalantly.
“I thought you meant 4:00 pm.” Pearl complained. She was not happy about being woken up this early.
Jason was already out of bed, going around to Pearl's side. He set her upright on the bed. Pearl was still a bit woozy from her early rising.
Jason walked over to the countertop and made a cup of coffee. He took a sip from it. “Want some?” he asked, holding out the cup. Pearl assumed he would make another one for her.
“Sure.”
Jason came over and handed the cup to her. The cup he had been drinking from seconds before. Pearl just sat there looking surprised and confused.
“Am I supposed to drink it?” Pearl asked stupidly.
Jason sighed and turned around to face her, “Yes Pearl, you drink the coffee.”
A short while later, Pearl and Chloe were inside Jason's car. Jason had taken Pearl outside for a walk just so they could talk a bit, and then had woken Chloe up. Now they were driving off to that somewhere to complement that something.
“Where are we going this early in the morning?”
“Aren't you hungry?” Jason flicked the turn signal on and turned into a street loaded with restaurants.
“We're having breakfast here. Michael will be there.”
“Really? I've missed him this summer so much!” Chloe chirped. Michael was her boyfriend.
Jason pulled up to a restaurant with the name 'Pancake House Café'.
Inside Jason showed the woman at the front desk his reservation, and she led them to their table.
“Michael!” Chloe exclaimed, picking up her pace.
“Hey guys!” he sounded just as enthusiastic, “Sorry I couldn't make it yesterday.”
Chloe reached him first and gave him a hug and kiss. She had missed him a lot over her summer job.
The rest of the group greeted Michael and Pearl started talking about all the crazy things that happened last night. Michael seemed to be taking it very well.
“It all seemed so surreal!” Pearl was saying.
Michael responded with forced enthusiasm, “Really?”
“Yeah! It was crazy.”
“Wow.” There was a bit of silence and then Michael excused himself to go to the restroom.
“Hello! I'm Claire, you're waitress for today. Can I get your order yet or are you still deciding?”
Jason looked at Pearl and Chloe and then back at the waitress, “I'm ready, but I don't know about them.” Jason pointed at the girls.
“I'm ready.” Pearl said.
“Me too.”
Chloe looked down and noticed that Michael had left his phone on his seat. It must have fallen out of his pocket when he got up. She turned it on and read the first message in the notifications.
"You're doing great Michael. Keep this a secret and don't tell anyone. We already had a close call with those kids yesterday. If the police find out, the plan will surely fail. By the way, did…"
That was all that would show, but Chloe knew what he was talking about. When Michael came back from the restroom, Chloe walked towards the exit and said to him, “Come here.”
