Chapter 7 of 14 - A Double

Pearl and Chloe were standing outside Jason's room. It was evident that they would not be able to stay in their dorm tonight, so they had temporarily moved over to Jason's place. “Just so you know, I really appreciate you doing this for us Jason.” Chloe said for the fifth time. “I really should know by now.” Chloe muttered something and walked inside. The room smelled like a fresh carpet in the store. Jason started giving them a tour of the place, but Pearl stopped him with a shake of her head. “We're not in a castle Jason.” “I still felt it would be at least a little helpful.” Chloe was already sprawled out on the bed with none of Jason's electronics on in. “At least I get a bed all for myself!” Pearl and Jason turned to look at Chloe. Pearl asked, “What about me? Am I sleeping on the couch?” then instantly regretted it. She thought Chloe might take that seriously. Chloe tilted her head to look at Pearl, “Aren't you two sharing a double?” “Huh?” “We what?” There was silence. “Sorry, I thought you two had worked that out already.” Chloe apologized, “I can make room if you want me to, Pearl.” Jason was quick to answer, “No that's fine.” Pearl jerked her head at Jason with her jaw touching the floor. He laughed at her expression. He threw her onto his bed and left to take a shower. “Chloe, I'm goanna kill you.” Chloe just laughed and said, “Are you though? I think you two are cute together.” “Why do you have to make it so obvious?” “Because: you two could be on the cover of a romance magazine.” A muffled “I heard that!” came from the direction of the shower. Chloe responded in a very intentionally sarcastic way, “Oops.” “Listen, I have had my adventure for today, trust me. I don't need any more drama.” “Whatever Pearl.” Chloe laid out her zoo employee outfit on the bed and prepared it for tomorrow. The events of tonight had seemed to stop time, but time goes on. Tomorrow Pearl would have to go back to work, and she wasn't going to be able to get much sleep tonight. Soon summer would be over, and she would be back to school. She didn't often have time to relax and enjoy life for long. There was always something; homework, tests, school job… wired trapdoor that led to a shapeshifting lab with giant creatures inside… “Pearl!” Pearl shook her head and looked up, “Huh?” she realized she had been drifting. “I asked you if you wanted to take a shower.” Jason asked. “No, not really.” “C'mon, you're going to get my bed dirty. Just take a shower.” Pearl sensed a bit of urgency and saw the twinkle in his eyes. “Fine.” She got up and grabbed a towel from the rack. With one last look at Jason, she stepped inside the bathroom. Hot steamy air from the last shower was everywhere. Well, almost everywhere. A message scribbled on the mirror in Jason's crude handwriting said, 'East Beach, 4:00 tomorrow.' Pearl had seen what Jason wanted to show her but didn't understand why he showed it like this. She stepped back out but kept the towel. “Already?” Chloe asked, “You didn't even turn it on!” Pearl ignored Chloe and turned to Jason. “Why didn't you just tell me?” “Tell you what? What's happening?” Chloe questioned. “Thought it would be more fun that way. Also it would get you to take a bath. But you didn't.” Jason said. “I'm going to.” “Then go, you have a long day tomorrow.” Pearl knew she had work the next day, but she couldn't help but feel Jason meant something more by that phrase. She would just have to find out the next day.
