Chapter 6 of 14 - Not Alone

Jason drove for a few minutes in silence. He pulled up on a parking lot next to a large hill. Once he got out we walked over and opened the door for Pearl. “Need help getting out?” Jason teased her. Pearl didn't answer and just glared at him while she got out of the car. The leaves crackled under their feet as they walked up the hill. There was a chirping of crickets and hooting of owls in the background. A slight mist gave the setting an eerie look. When they reached the top, Jason grabbed Pearl's waist and gently lifted her up onto a large, flat, rock, then climbed up himself. They looked out at the view. The sunset outlined perfect contours of the eloquent clouds. Mountains in the background stood proudly, creating rays of light that extended far into the sky. They were on a beach, and the quiet rippling of waves blended in with the sounds of the other creatures in the night. “It's beautiful.” Pearl whispered. “I thought you would like it.” Jason said, stroking her blond hair. Pearl was still a bit shaken by what happened today, and the cold air helped calm her down. She sat down and Jason followed. “I know what happened today scared you.” Jason said calmly. Pearl nodded and leaned her head against Jason. She felt the temperature change as she leaned on Jason's warm body. Jason continued, “Well, I guess we at least got someone to try to fix it.” They sat there holding hands for a minute or two, watching the sunset. Soon it was dark, and Jason began to get up, ready to drive back. Pearl groaned; she was in a comfortable position and didn't want to move. “Come on Pearl, you don't want to catch a cold.” 'If it means I get to lie down and just enjoy you, maybe!' Pearl thought. “We don't need to be up here to do that.” “What?” Pearl froze, then realized her mistake, “Did I say that out loud?” “Yes.” He helped her down the rock and pulled her to his chest. After giving her a kiss on the head, he turned her around to look her in the eye. Pearl thought it was cute how he could move her around so easily. Jason pulled her in and gave her a kiss. “Pearl, you are something.” “Is that good or bad?” “Both. In a way. You are unique, is what I mean to say. You have the ability to get yourself into mischief and get yourself out of it with the same method.” Pearl smiled. She liked it when Jason monologed. The air was cold enough that you could see their breath as a white mist. They walked back to the car and Jason opened the passenger door for her. Pearl got in and he briskly walked across to the other side. Her phone in her pocket went crazy out of nowhere and when she looked, she had received about a thousand text messages from Chloe. “There was no cell service on the beach.” Jason explained, leaning over to try to see what they said, “She probably has been trying to reach you.” Pearl looked at some of the photos and Jason saw that she looked worried but not surprised. “What's wrong?” Pearl turned the phone around for Jason to see. “Oh… crap.” “I'm gonna call her.” Pearl dialled Chloe's number but her voice on the receiver was very static and glitchy. “Hello? Chloe… hey, listen, I can't understand you…” Jason glanced at her with a worried look. “Ok Chloe I can't… Ok listen we're on our way.” They quickly left the parking lot and sped towards Pearl's dorm. While they were on their way, Pearl read through the messages Chloe sent. “Look here, she says that she didn't want to stay in our room because of the incident, and when the police finished investigating the hole, they said they saw everything and surrounded the door with caution tape!” Pearl was summarizing Chloe's messages. “Did she change rooms?” “That's why she needed our help. All the rooms in the dorm are occupied.” “I think I could spare you two one of the beds in my hotel room for now.” “I— I can just rent a room, I mean—” “No, no, this is fine. Rooms cost money.” Pearl didn't know how to react. “Thank you?” “Your welcome.” Jason said, “We're welcome.”
