Jason had lost the item that saved their lives.
“No!” He made a reach for it but missed. The group heard the watch hit the floor of the vent, and the box surrounding the man fell away.
He started shooting at them, but the group was too quick. They rounded a corner and hid behind a wall.
Once the man had passed them, they turned back around and ran down the hallway.
Chloe asked, “What if this is a dead end?”
“We'll hope it's not.” Jason answered, panting.
The group ran for a few seconds and turned a corner. They went through a doorway to find a giant room with many heavy-duty solid gates on the walls.
“Oh, wow.” Chloe said.
Without them noticing, the man that had been chasing them had found them and locked their way out.
They walked up to one of the gates to inspect it, and for some reason, it started opening. In reality, the man had opened it.
It opened very slowly, and when fully opened, the group could hear growling noises from inside. It seemed to be walking towards them.
The creature slowly started to appear from the dark. First it's nose, eyes, and head. A huge tiger, bigger than an elephant. It had a bony head that acted like a shield, perfect for slamming into things, and sharp teeth created for tearing and ripping apart any opposition. It stood there for a second trying to figure things out.
“Uh-oh.”
“Maybe it's nice…”
The tiger let out a terrifying roar that sent the group sprinting towards the exit, only to find out that it was locked. With every step that it took charging towards them, the ground shook beneath it.
“We're trapped!”
The tiger lowered its head down, exposing it's bony head.
“Jump to the side!” Jason shouted.
The group jumped just in time for the tiger to smash it's head against the wall, crumbling it to pieces. The crack and thud of the impact reverberated everywhere. The group covered their heads to protect them from flying bits of the wall.
“Still think it's nice, Pearl?” Jason asked her.
“Now's not the time.”
One by one, all the gates started opening; when the tiger smashed the wall, he smashed the system for the gates as well. Giant mutants of animals all started appearing. Giant spiders, ants, lions, tigers, bats, eagles, you name it.
A giant tarantula, matching the giant tiger, spotted them. It started running towards the friends, and in a few short seconds, was nearly in front of them. It was about to strike when the tiger slammed into it, sending the spider skidding across the floor. The two got into an intense fight, and Jason, Chloe, and Pearl used this opportunity to run out of the room.
They heard the spider slam into the wall behind them but didn't dare to look.
Jason, who had been paying more attention when he got here, led them back to the exit. Every twist and turn made them feel like they were on a circle. They reached the exit eventually and were more than relieved.
They were panting like crazy for a few seconds.
“Jason, what were you doing in there?” Pearl asked.
“Well, I came to see you two and Michael but wanted it to be a surprise.”
“Michael isn't here. He works at the mainland you know.” Chloe said.
“Didn't he come yesterday?”
“No.”
“That's odd.” Jason said, “Well anyways, I found the trapdoor under you bed and was curious…”
“I think I can understand from there.” Pearl said and they were quiet for a few seconds.
“He needed to get in our room for the keys.” Chloe commented.
“But why a trapdoor?”
“I don't know.”
This was all so much to take in. It felt like it should be impossible, and yet… there it was. It couldn't be staged, and it definitely wasn't a dream. Everything had felt so real, and it still did.
“So what are we going to do about this mess?” Chloe asked.
“Tell the police!” Jason and Pearl answered at the same time.
“What?!” Chloe was surprised that they would suggest that “They well never believe us.”
“You never know.”
