Chapter 12 of 14 - $3,100

It's crazy how fast things took off after the incident. In the outbreak, surprisingly only 14 people were killed. 45 people were injured but survived, and along with all the other complaints about Finn Zoo, the government managed to shut it down. The secret laboratory story was brought up, but unsurprisingly, turned down. Pearl was prescribed 6 weeks in a cast. She woke up the next morning to Jason asleep in a chair next to her. No one else was in the room. “Jason?” Pearl whispered weakly. “Jason!” Jason flickered his eyed and then remembered where he was. He had convinced the nurse to let him stay in Pearl's room for the night. “Pearl! You're awake!” he jumped up and gave her a kiss. “Are you ok?” “No. My arm and thigh hurt.” “You broke your arm.” Pearl's face was flushed. At the same time, she expected it to hurt more than this. “The nurse said you're on crazy pain relief.” Pearl leaned back into her cot, and Jason sat of the edge of the bed. “I can't believe he got away with another take down!” Pearl said. “Well, at least the government owns the place now and not that mad man.” “His name is Clade. Chloe told me. And think about all the poor families!” “I feel very sorry for them but there is nothing either of us can do about that.” “It's all my fault!” Pearl whined, getting back up. “What?” “I had a tranquilizer gun with me, why didn't I shoot it? Why did I try to climb back up the pole when I knew the pole was tipping?” “Pearl, you were panicking. And whoever left a tiger out is to blame as well. Maybe even more!” Pearl was lying with her back on the pillow, holding Jason's hand. She couldn't get what Jason had said earlier out of her mind: You have the ability to get yourself into mischief and get yourself out of it with the same method. What was that supposed to mean? “Are you going back home, I mean, now that the park is closed?” Jason wondered. “Wait, wait, wait, it's closed? Who— who closed it?” “The government. It went down really fast after the incident.” Pearl was breathing heavily. This job wasn't just for fun, she depended on the summer pay. “Where am I going to get the money from now? Working part time isn't going to keep it up. I depend on this money!” “How much do you get for tutoring?” “15$ per hour.” Jason whistled. “My parents can't afford to pay for anything more than the bills.” Pearl was flushed. “You're living paycheck to paycheck?” “Mostly.” “Well, why did you never tell me?” “Because we didn't need help!” Pearl placed her hand on Jason's. Both of them were quiet for a moment. Their moment was interrupted by a doctor coming in. “Hey there— umm…” the doctor looked at the paper in his hand, “Pearl!” “That's me.” “I'm Dr. Spenz. Nice to meet you, Pearl. How are you feeling?” the doctor said. “My arm and leg hurt like crazy.” He smiled lightly, “That is to be expected. You broke you're arm and tore your leg. The total cost of the treatment for both injuries was $3,100.” Pearl gasped. She thought she was screwed before… “Your parents are on the way to pick you up, they should be here in a few hours. The nurse arranged it in a way that you could stay at home while your injuries heal. And with that, you should be all ready.” Jason looked back at Pearl and mouthed the price the doctor had said. The doctor handed Pearl a bag and explained what all the items inside were. It was just all the pain killers, antiseptics, and so on. With one last look at Jason, confused as to what he was doing here, the doctor left. “I'm so sorry you're having to go through this, Pearl.” Jason ran his hand through his hair, “Just remember, I'm here for you. You don't need to do it alone. I'm here to help.” Pearl was still thinking about the price. What were her parents going to say to her? She couldn't believe they had just thrown away three thousand dollars. This was getting even more crazy, even if it seemed like it had reached the limit.
