Pearl stepped inside and slowly walked around the enclosure. She was looking for anything that might scare the tigers. They had been removed from the enclosure for safety and were stowed away in a cage in the back of the enclosure.
The enclosure was lit by sunlight, so it had a sort of African feel. There were rocks and lakes here and there to give it a natural look. A river separated the two parts of the sector. Pearl climbed up on a rock to get a better view and definitely saw something that caught her attention. It was a gray and white blob on the ground and had a weird string like thing coming out of the back.
Then the blob moved.
Thoughts raced through her mind. Does it see me? How did they miss one? Am I hallucinating? Why did I agree to this? She was breathing heavily now, and as if on que, her phone vibrated in her pocket. Someone was calling her, and sure enough, in a short second, the ringtone came.
When her phone rung, the tiger got up and looked at her with its menacing eyes. It tilted its head a bit just like the giant one in the lab had, and then started charging at Pearl.
Pearl froze for a second, forgetting that she had a tranquilizer with her. Instead of shooting it, she ran in the other direction. She knew the tiger was faster than her, so she climbed a security camera pole she came across. The tiger continued running at her, and when he reached the pole, started climbing up it.
Her phone was still ringing, invigorating the tiger.
She let go of one hand to silence it but slipped with only one hand holding on. She grabbed on with the other hand again. Now she was mere feet from the tiger.
The tiger backed down and stepped back a few meters, only to come running back into it with enough force that the pole began to tip.
The pole tipped a bit, then stopped, putting Pearl in a false sense of security. She tried to climb up a bit more, but the movement set the pole going again. This time there was no stopping it. It came down with such force that it crashed through the enclosure window, opening up the enclosure to the public. Scared children and parents ran away from there screaming and pushing like never before.
The tiger, sensing its newfound freedom, gave up of Pearl and went straight towards the glass. It left the enclosure and ran after the public.
The way the pole had cut through the glass like that had broken Pearl's fall a bit, but she was still knocked unconscious. She was bruised and burned everywhere with a large gash on her thigh.
Chloe was notified of the accident and immediately called her parents and Jason. Pearl was taken to the hospital and Jason met her there. He came rushing into the hospital room, not even bothering to introduce himself.
“Pearl!” He shouted.
“Hey, hey, hey, you can't just be barging in like that! Who even are you?” the nurse in the room said.
Jason ignored her. Instead, he went straight to Pearl's cot. He was about to grab her hand when the nurse stopped him.
“Stop! She's got a broken arm.”
“This is my girlfriend. I need to help her!”
“Sir I'm sorry but there isn't much you can do.” The nurse was trying to shoo him out of the room.
“Can you at least wake her up so I can talk to her? Please!” Jason was desperate.
“She's unconscious.”
“Oh no, no, no! Pearl!” Jason was about to grip her hand again, but he remembered what the nurse said.
“I'll wait here until she's awake.”
“What?” the nurse said, “That might be hours!”
“I'll stay for hours just please tell me she's ok!”
“Listen, as far as we can tell, she doesn't have any fatal injuries, but I can't guarantee anything. Now please go.”
Jason's breathing was shaky, and he was desperate. “I told her yesterday that I would be there for her no matter what. I'll stay until she wakes up. Even if it takes days.”
