This is the story Confidence told from Aubrey's perspective. Aubrey must learn that life long friendships are hard to find, and even harder to keep, will she keep all of her friends through their struggles.
It turns out that Olivia is a better sculptor than me, she is also smarter, faster, and a lot of other better things than me, this year I´m going to join her winter swim, she was happy for me, so I will be happy for her.
Any who, on July 31, we went to our Country Club after camp, Olivia brought along her Popsicle, and it´s really good. We swam laps for Reagan, Olivia´s dog, then we got ice cream.
I was bored, so I asked.¨Are you excited for our first year of middle school?¨
She sat their thinking for a moment.
¨I don´t know, what if we have terrible teachers?¨
I laughed and said, ¨Oh, Olivia, you are such a worry wart, it´s going to be so much fun.¨.
I could tell that she was uncomfortable, she always picks at her elbow skin when she is, trust me, she´s been my friend for a while.
¨I´m sorry I brought it up Olivia, let´s get back in the pool.¨.
Olivia loves Tippy Tacos, I don´t mean to brag, but, I introduced it to her. She liked it a lot, and so did I. I mean they are the best tacos ever.
We drove Olivia home and she thanked us, then her parents thanked us and we drove away.
My mom and I didn´t talk, that was until we got into the driveway, when I tried to get out my mom stopped me.
¨Aubrey, last night Reagan couldn´t stand up, ¨ she starts, I sit back down.
¨They had to put her down today.¨
I gasp ¨What, did Olivia know? What time did it happen?¨ I´m freaking out.
¨They put her down at 12:00, and Olivia didn´t know.¨ I start to cry.
I run inside the house, Olivia didn´t know, this day was all an act, those laps we swam for her didn´t mean anything, she was already dead, but Reagan meant everything to her. I run into my room and flop down on the bed, I cry until I go to sleep, I didn´t even change out of my suit.
The next morning I don´t speak, Olivia and I don´t speak in the car, we don´t speak at camp, all she does is mound her clay over and over again, and so do I.
4 weeks later, school starts.
