Haze Smith had a dog, a German Shepherd named Major. This book tells about the story of Haze and Major. Inspired by my own dog, Luna (a border collie.) Haze and Major's time together seemed short, even though it was 14 years.
7:00 A.M, Smith family house
Major fell off the bed with a yelp, and Haze jumped up in surprise. When she realized that Major has snuck up, she clenched her teeth. "Oh, you-!" She shouted but Major ran out of the room, tail tucked between his legs. He stayed under the couch until breakfast and hoped that Haze wouldn't go to 'school'. But she did. Major was alone again. He went to the back-yard and heard a bark. He looked behind the metal fence and saw another puppy, a Golden Retriever. The puppy barked, wagging his tail. Major growled, unsure if the puppy was safe or not. He watched, and the golden puppy showed no signs of aggression, but only invited Major to play. Major gave in and jumped around. 'What's your name? I'm Major.' Major barked.
'They call me Biscuit.' The pup replied.
The two young puppies played until Major heard the door unlock. He rushed inside the house and realized that it was Biscuit's house door unlocking, not his. He sighed sadly. He went back to the backyard, and notices Biscuit was growling at a furry animal, a bloody cut was on his shoulder, and the animal's fur went up. The animal had an eye, a strange eye, and suddenly, the animal made a hissing sound! 'That's a cat, his name is Smokey.' Biscuit growled, jumping back.
Major ran forward and barked. His bark rang through the neighborhood, silencing the chirping birds, and Smokey the cat retreated.
Biscuit stood there, stunned.
10:05 A.M, school
Haze looked up at the clock. She sighed. She scribbled down a feel more ideas for her writing but erased them. The teacher could see she was having trouble.
"Haze, do you need help?" She asked.
Forcing a smile, Haze shook her head.
The teacher nodded and walked away. Haze scribbled down more ideas and grinned. She kept on writing, and soon, it was like she wrote a novel. She looked at the clock again and was surprised to see 10:30.
"Lunch everyone! Hurry put your pencils away." The teacher said.
We scurried down the halls to the cafeteria, where Jenny and Lacey were waiting. As they ate, Jenny tried to keep her mouth shut but she couldn't keep it any longer.
She blurted out, "Who's Major?"
The sisters froze.
"What?" Lacey asked.
"The person- or whatever- you were talking about yesterday," Jenny replied.
"Major.... is a car my father sold yesterday. We call it Major." Lacey lied.
"And your mother fed Major?" Jenny asked.
"Um... we call it 'feeding', but our mom took Major to the gas station." Lacey lied again.
Jenny was feeling suspicious, and wouldn't give up.
"Why didn't you tell me about it?" She asked.
Lacey was searching for words.
"Well, it wasn't a big deal." Haze butted in.
Jenny shook her head and said, "I know you're telling the truth. Spill the tea!"
The sisters were in a panic.
"Jen, we'll tell you when we're ready," Lacey explained.
Frustrated, Jenny said no more and ate her food.
11:00 AM, Smith family house
Major wagged his tail as Biscuit appeared. Biscuit ran to him and greeted him with a wagging tail. The pups had been playing all day, and they never got bored with each other. One by one, the pups had shown each other their toys, now, dog toys were scattered all over their back-yards. Mom had come home and fed Major his lunch. Biscuit told Major about the child in his family, Eda. Major shared about Haze and Lacey. He told Biscuit about his birthplace, the barn. Biscuit had been born in a cage, a place that humans called the animal shelter. Major had many questions, and Biscuit had many questions about the cows, sheep, chickens, and farm life. 'Do you want another young human? Like I have two?' Major had asked Biscuit. Biscuit gave Major a doggy grin. 'As much as a little pup can wish for!' He had replied. Major learned that Biscuit was everyone-friendly, and he loved children. Biscuit came from an interesting breed, bred to carry back the game hunters shot. 'I have met a Border Collie before, and he was an old dog. He said that he worked on farms.' Biscuit barked. Major heard stories from the smart Golden Retriever.
Soon, Haze and Lacey came home, and Major good-bye to Biscuit.
