They ran as far as they could before they came to a dead end.
"What do we do?" Peggy cried despairingly. "She's going to catch us and boil us in a steaming volcano at any moment!"
Nora knew she only had a second to think of a plan. Then she remembered something she had read in a book about two very smart children who were pushed into a cave so they couldn't interfere with some evil plans, and there was no obvious way out, but then they found a large stick and pushed through a soft spot in the cave roof and made it out just in time to save the day.
"Quick! Does anyone have a stick or something heavy that can easily break something else?" she asked."If we're just right under the ground then we can break through the roof and climb out of the dungeon!"
"I have a knife." Mr. Martin reached in his pocket then handed Nora a long, silver pocket knife. She opened it then felt on the ceiling for a soft spot. When she found one, she stuck the knife into the ceiling. She cut a hole just wide enough for the biggest person in the group (who was undoubtedly Mr. Martin) to squeeze through.
"We have to hurry," Martha whispered. "She'll find us any second."
Mr. Martin went through the hole first then pulled his sons, then all of the ladies threw.
Just as Peggy, the last of them, was pulled to safety on the ground, they heard a shocked gasp come from the pit below them.
"How-how did they do this?" The evil witch's voice screamed.
"Go!" Frannie screamed.
Everyone jumped up and ran towards the town. They ran as if their lives depended on it.
Except, of course, they did.
