14-year-old Ky Jefferson and 17-year-old Noah Jefferson have recently murdered discovered parents by an unknown being! They must avenge their deaths, and solve the mystery of their murdered parents! Will they be able to stop the Disintegration in time?
I waited in the lobby for Noah to come out of the interrogation room. The longer it took, the more nervous I became. All I could think about was Mom and Dad though, even though Noah in the interrogation room was stressful enough. I thought about the memories we had as a family. All those memories that we lost, and could never come back.
I also thought about that monster that I saw. What the heck was that thing? Why did it kill our parents? It obviously didn't kill them to eat them, because if it did, they would be dead within a few seconds, and would be just a skeleton or something of that nature. I really had a lot of questions about that thing, and I really didn't have a way to get an answer.
Noah came out of the room and walked over to me where I was sitting. The police officer was right behind him. Once they got to me, Noah stopped and looked at me for a few seconds.
“C'mon kid, get up”, said Noah.
“Why? Are we going somewhere?”, I asked.
“Yes, now c'mon, get up”
I got up and followed him and the officer out the police station. We got in the police car and we drove off.
At first, I had no idea where we were going. But then I finally realized what happens to kids without parents: we were going to the orphanage! This was something I never imagined happening, and neither did Noah. We both thought we were going to grow up in our own house, graduate from high school, and go to college like any other kid. Now we were going to be homeless, deserted, and unwanted.
11:08 P.M
We arrived at the orphanage pretty late that night. It didn't have gates and when I realized this, I started to wonder if anyone's escaped from here yet. Although it didn't have gates, it was really big, and probably populated by a lot of homeless kids. The orphanage was right smack in the middle of the city and was about 9 miles from our house. The place was 3 stories high and had many many buildings. About 12 from what I could see. I was glad that that was a factor.
Ever since I was little, I've loved to climb things. Whenever I needed to relieve stress, I would just climb to the top of whatever interested me, and just sit on the top of it. Since this orphanage was pretty tall, I would have a nice view of the city. I was really looking forward to that.
The police officer walked us into the orphanage. When we walked in there, expected for there to be a long line of dirty homeless people in front of the desk, but it actually wasn't half bad. There was no line of people, it was actually pretty clean, and it smelled like delicious chicken in there (likely because we were right next to the kitchen.
We walked up to the desk where the reception desk was. There was a lady with blonde hair, blue eyes, with a white form-fitting shirt and a black short dress. I thought if this was an example of what the people at the place were gonna look like, then it might not be that bad.
The officer explained to the lady about what happened, and that we need a place to stay for a while. The lady asked us about our names, relations, and ages. Noah and I told her everything she needed to know, and she took us to our rooms. Noah and I needed were gonna have to share a bed, which I wasn't too thrilled about. The room was a decent size, although it didn't have a bathroom. When I noticed this, it concerned me.
“Hey, where is the bathroom and the shower?”, I asked the lady.
“We have a shower downstairs, and a bathroom we all share on each floor”, the lady explained.
That I wasn't happy about! Everyone on each floor has to share one restroom. What if I really needed to go and I had to wait in a line every single night? I would go crazy! Then I thought about the roof, I could just go up there if it was a long line. The problem was solved!
“Wake up time is 8:00 in the morning, and breakfast is at 9:00. At 9:30 we start school time in the building farthest back and to the left. School lets out at 12:00 for lunch, and then school starts back at 1:00 until 4:30. Then we have time where you can socialize and hang out with friends from 5:00 until you go to bed. Dinner is at 6:00, and you can eat with your friends. Bedtime is 10:00 P.M and you have to be at the room by 10:30, or you will get in trouble if you get caught by the guards”, the lady explained.
“Ok”, Noah and I said.
“Everyone's in bed right now, so I would suggest you go to bed as soon as possible ok?”
“Yeah, we got it”
“Good night boys”, she said as she started to shut the door.
Right then, I thought about clothes and if we were gonna wear the same clothes every day.
“Wait!!”, I said in a slightly raised voice.
“What?”, she asked.
“What about our clothes? Are we gonna wear the same clothes every day?”
“Oh no. The police are going to bring your clothes from your house as soon as they can. We will wash them regularly, don't worry.
“When will we expect to have our clothes?”, Noah asked.
“Tomorrow at the most, like I said, don't worry about it”, she replied.
“Good night now”, she said as she shut the door all the way this time.
As soon as she shut the door, Noah called the side closest to the wall, so that meant I had to sleep right on the edge (meaning I had the potential of falling off). Although things weren't that good for me, at least the place wasn't that bad so far. Hopefully, the people here weren't bad, because I hoped this would give me a break when it comes to conflict with other people, particularly fighting.
Noah and I got into the bed and as Noah said, he got the side closest to the wall. Noah moves a lot in his sleep, so I knew this was going to be a long (hopefully not) few years. Because whenever Noah gets what he wants, he is going to call it forever if he thinks there is a chance I might end up calling it for a night or two. And exactly like I thought, Noah called it for as long as we were at this place. So that meant for as long as we were here, I was going to be dealing with bad sleep until he turns 18-years-old. Which is not going to be for another year. And then it looks like I would be there for another 4 years, which is when I turn 18.
The thing about Noah is that he is a big jerk like any typical brother is, but whenever I'm in any sort of danger (like fighting), he is there for me and will protect me with his life. So it seems like he hates me at times, but he loves me deep down and will be there for me when it matters most.
4:34 A.M
I woke up within 4 to 5 hours after going to sleep. I really needed to go to the bathroom, so I got up and left the room to go to the bathroom. Luckily, it wasn't occupied, so I was able to go without having to wait. I went back to the room and tried to go back to bed. But I couldn't stop thinking about what happened just the other night. I need to clear my head, so I thought about going on top of the roof. So I opened our window and climbed out. I'm a pretty experienced climber, so I was able to get pretty high up the building. But right when I was just about to get to the roof, it started raining. That meant I was in deep trouble right now. It started getting slippery for my hands. But by this time, I already was starting to try to pull myself up over the roof. I tried to start climbing down, but my feet slipped off the ledge I was standing on for support. I was hanging on to this pole that was sticking out over the edge of the roof.
My hands were starting to slip off the pole, and I knew I was only seconds away from meeting my demise.
But then when my hands lost their grip and I was a split second into falling, something grabbed my hands that saved my life. I looked up and it looked like someone's hands. Then they started pulling me up to the roof. I tried to help them by pushing my legs up the wall to make it faster. I finally was safely on the roof, and I was happy that someone was there to save my life.
I looked up to thank the person after catching my breath, and it was a girl. She had brown hair, green, hazel eyes, and she was wearing a black thin jacket, black skinny jeans, and white shoes. She was more beautiful than I thought orphan kids my age would be.
“Thank you so much!”, I said as I gasped for air.
“You're welcome”, she said.
I looked at her for a few awkward seconds while I caught my breath.
“You know you shouldn't be climbing in the rain right?”, she stated.
“Yeah I know, it started raining while I was about to get to the top here”, I explained.
She nodded her head and then she got up and walked over to the edge that was facing the sunrise. It stopped raining at that moment.
I watched her from behind, as the sunrise made her figure into a silhouette. I got up and walked over next to her, watching the sunrise with her.
She waited a few seconds until she broke the silence.
“So what did you come up here for?”, she asked.
“I couldn't go back to sleep”
She nodded her head in understanding. She waited a few seconds until she spoke again.
“You know, I haven't seen you around. Are you new here?”
“Yeah, just came in here at about 11:00 last night with my brother”
“Oh, ok. What caused you to come here?”
“Um, well, I don't really want to talk about it.”, I said honestly.
“Ok, that's understandable”, she said.
We looked back at the sunrise that was starting to turn into day. We watched it for a few minutes.
“Well, we better get back before breakfast time comes”, she said as she got up to leave.
“Wait!”, I said sharply.
She stopped and looked back at me.
“What?”
“Before you leave, what's your name?”, I asked.
“I don't know. What is it?”, she jokingly said.
She smiled at me while she was turning to walk away. I smiled back to not look awkward.
“But what is it really though?”, I asked again
“Wow, isn't that interesting?”, she jokingly said again as she ran off towards the edge.
I thought she was about to fall off and commit suicide or something, but then she took a big jump to another building right across from us. She landed on the other building safely and gracefully. I watched her in awe as she looked back at me and smiled.
“And my name is Melanie by the way if you really want to know!”, she shouted from the roof of the other building.
She climbed down the building gracefully and smoothly, and through her window and shut it behind her.
Now I had to worry about getting down to my own room. But the problem was, I didn't remember which one it was.
How unfortunate!
