Chapter 12 of 14 - Secrets of Lightswifting

"C'mon you banshees, wake up", the old lady said as she stormed into our room, and pulled us out of bed. I fell off the top bunk and nearly busted my head open on the wooden ground. I worked so hard to win the top bunk last night. Noah always tries to take the top bunk whenever we have to sleep in one. But luckily, he was so caught up in hanging out with Penelope that he forgot about the sleep situation. Honestly, I could care less if Noah and Penelope suddenly hit it off, but it's only been a day, and they're acting like they've known each other for years. At least Melanie and I have known each other for a while now. But the only problem I'm having is that I'm super awkward, even though I know she likes me. I've never really dated any girls before (except for one when I was like 7, which I'm not gonna talk about right now). So I'm just a bit confused if we're dating or not. Did it happen, just like that? I feel like I missed a step or something? But judging by the way she's been treating me after she kissed me on the cheek, I'm pretty sure we are. But anyway, that's beside the point, because I'm sure there are lots of you who came here for the Lightswifting, not the teenage romance. "C'mon, get up Noah", Penelope said out of nowhere. I didn't know when she got there, because I didn't notice her when the old lady walked into the room. I thought maybe my eyes were playing with me or something because it was about 3:00 in the morning after all. But by far the worst part of all of it was when Penelope made a ball of light come out of her hand, and she shot it up towards the ceiling. Which illuminated the whole room very brightly. "OK! Now I'm definitely up!", Noah shouted in shock. "C'mon, we've gotta get to Ubar before 8:00! So chop-chop, let's go!", the old lady told us as she walked out the door. "Wait, what?", we both said as we looked at each other in confusion. "CHOP-CHOP I SAID!", she shouted from the other room. Noah and I both groaned and stood up. "Are we gonna wear the same clothes or something? Because I think that is a little bit of a prob-" "-Of course you aren't gonna wear the same clothes, mama made you new clothes yesterday", Penelope interrupted me and pointed down to the clothes folded neatly in a pile by the wall. Noah and I looked at the pile of clothes in shock, and we didn't even notice Penelope leave. How did that lady make that many pieces of clothing in one day? Like that was a pretty short amount of time to do that! Then I remembered when we first saw the lady. She was sewing a piece of clothing, and it looked like the string that she had hooked up to the needle looked like it was the light that Melanie emitted when she used Lightswifting. So maybe the clothes were made of a special kind of light or something. When that crossed my mind, I thought about how cool Lightswifting really was and I couldn't wait to learn more about it! I quickly got the clothes supposedly made of light on and walked out the door. I went down the hallway with the big window glass doors and towards the room where the books were scattered across the floor. I heard Penelope and Melanie talking in there, so for some reason I decided to hide behind the wall and listen to them. Right after that, I heard them mention my name. "So what about Ky?", Penelope asked. "What do you mean?", Melanie asked. "You know, are you guys a thing yet or?" Melanie paused. "No...well, yes. We haven't really talked about it yet. I mean, yeah, he's really cute, but...", Melanie paused. "...But what?", Penelope asked. "I'm not 100% sure if he will still like me after he finds out more about who I truly am", she said quickly and apprehensively. Penelope chuckled. "Oh my goodness Melanie, how would he not like you? I mean, anyone would fall for you instantly if they found out you're the king and queen's daughter!", Penelope chuckled. "Yeah, but-" They stopped talking when I decided to walk into the room. "Oh, hey Ky!", said Penelope. I looked over at them as if I hadn't been eavesdropping for the last minute. "Hey! Good morning", I replied. Penelope smiled, but Melanie just gave me the good ol' "Oh hey, I definitely wasn't just talking about you!" look. "So, what are you guys talking about?", I asked with a "trying to be straight" face. The girls both looked at each other and back at me. "We were just talking about how Mel-" "About how excited we were to go to Ubar!", Melanie interrupted. Then she looked over at Penelope really quickly with a slightly angry look, and then back at me. "Ok. But, what exactly is Ubar?", I asked curiously. "Wait, you've never heard of the city of Ubar?", Penelope asked. I shook my head. "Wow that's crazy", Penelope stated. "He's American", Melanie mentioned quietly. "Oooohhhh! Ok, well most Americans know it by the "Atlantis of the Sands", she restated. Now that was starting to sound a bit more familiar. I remembered learning about it on this TV show that I've watched before. "But isn't Atlantis of the Sands buried underneath the sand?", I asked, thinking about that TV show. "That's just a myth that the world has made up. The truth about it has been lost to the world, just like a bunch of other secrets has. The truth is that you just can't see Ubar because it's been covered up by Lightswifting. Ubar is a real city where all Lightswifters live and train at, which is why we're going there today", Melanie explained. "But what do you mean by "covered up" though? By like sand, like we actually think?", I asked. "No, there's another skilled us Lighswifters learned called Lightblending. We bend the light in a particular way to make things appear differently than they actually are.", Melanie explained further. "But then-" "-No more questions. We're leaving in 1 minute, so better go get breakfast before we leave, or you'll be hungry for the whole trip!", the old lady said as she stormed in the room suddenly. We watched her storm out the front door, and then we looked back at each other. "Well, uh, we'll talk about it later ok?" Penelope said as she walked into the kitchen. Melanie and I looked at each other for several awkward moments, until Melanie's habit was triggered again. "So, where's Noah?", she asked. I looked behind me, and all around but I didn't see him anywhere. "I don't know actually", I stated. "Melanie, Ky, catch!", Penelope shouted from the kitchen as she tossed two bananas towards us. Melanie caught hers, but I didn't (of course). "Why? Just why can't we cooperate?", I said to the banana on the ground. Penelope and Melanie both giggled. I picked up my banana, and we all walked out of the front door. When I got outside, I instantly wanted to go back inside. because it felt like it was at least 48 degrees out there. It was only 3:00 in the morning, so that probably explained it. But what I saw as soon as I got outside was something I didn't expect. I saw the old lady in a wooden wagon that was about 15 feet in length and 5 feet in height, and Noah was attached to a rope in the front of the wagon. Several things crossed my mind at that moment, but ultimately, I settled on one thought that I was certain was true, but hoped it wasn't. But my greatest fear at that moment became a reality. "Oh hey, Ky! Come on over and join your brother in pulling the wagon", the old lady said as she patted the front of the wagon. I stared at the lady, then at Noah who gave me a "yep, you heard her right" look. Then a question crossed my mind at that moment that had been left unanswered for almost two days now. "But why don't we just teleport there or something", I asked. At that moment, everyone, including Noah all giggled. Then the lady looked at me and said: "You know what, you're brother just asked me the same thing a minute or so before you came out here." They all laughed again. "You guys are so much alike aren't you. So I'll tell you the same thing that I told him", she said as Noah left out a little giggle after she did. Then the lady leaned her head in towards me a bit and said: "STOP BEING A LAZY P*SSY AND PULL THE WAGON!!", she shouted in an animated voice. That's when everyone but me fell to the ground and laughed their asses off. "Why is it always me?", I thought.
