Chapter 3 of 3 - The Garden

I look around in awe. It is huge, the ceiling seems to touch the sky, and a large chandelier lights the room up beautifully. Liam slowly wheels his chair up to the couch and Martha helps him onto it. I yawn and stretch my paws out, playing with the pink pom poms on a blanket. "I am going to call you Lil, do you like that?" he asks kindly, patting me gently as if he is scared I will break, I purr. I have never had this much attention in my life but I love it so. Being the only fur-covered creature in the room is nice, I feel unique! I close my eyes, slowly falling asleep while Liam is scratching behind my ears, which feels like heaven (he found my spot). When I open my eyes I can make out two big eyes staring at me. Liam! I remember where I am. "Meow," I say, pawing at Liam's hand. "I could use a nice little scratch right now, just behind the ears", I say to Liam. But I don't think he understands. Liam! He is such a bright soul, his eyes light up like stars and sparkle. I suddenly feel confused and disturbed. If Liam is such a good, kind, loving person, then why is he stuck in a wheelchair, not able to walk, jump and run like other kids. While there are so many bullies and nasty people out there who can walk and run, jump and dance, and do whatever they want. It just isn't fair, I thought with bitterness in my heart. "Lil, I have an idea, why don't I give you a tour of our garden, won't that be just splendid?" he exclaims joyfully, charming me with his big smile. I "Meow," showing my approval of the idea. I am picked up from off the couch abruptly. I peek out over Liam's arm examining the beautiful view. And sure enough Liam was right, it is splendid. It is the most beautiful garden I have ever seen. The grass is bright and green, neatly cut at a perfect length. Red, orange, pink, magenta, yellow, blotches of every color fill my eyes as I scan my surroundings. The tulips are in bloom, and jasmine hangs in large clusters, filling my nose with a sweet, delicious smell. Daffodils sway in the wind, and chrysanthemums sparkle showing off their dazzling colors. Everything is in perfect condition, clean and trimmed in some places, but wild and bright in others. Hummingbirds swoop to get a drink from the bird feeder. A small, lonely monarch butterfly flies to alight upon a sunset hyssop, camouflaging perfectly with the hyssop's orange petals. The buzz of the bees, the chirp of the birds, it is all too good to be true. I had just come from living in a pet orphanage, with a garden that unknowingly grew White Snakeroot (which my own mother died from), to living in what I think might be the most beautiful garden in America. I can't stand still any longer. I have to explore. I jump up and dart toward a butterfly as it moves down to a small chamomile that is growing low to the ground. It sees me and flies up into the air, flapping its bright wings to pick up speed. "Meow," I say, waving with my paw to the little butterfly. For what feels like hours, I am outside playing in the warm sunshine. But before my day slips away, the bright colors of the flowers and grass dulls down and the darkness takes over. It is time to go inside, and once again Liam lifts me off the ground and carries me back inside. It's so warm and cozy here, a fire burns and sheds an orange light upon the room. Liam gently places me in my cage. I have many blankets to choose from, but my favorite one of them all remains the yellow one. I curl up into a ball, it is nighttime now, and I have spent my first day at Liam's house. "Bye bye kitty," Liam says and shuts the cage door. He wheels away into his room. I suddenly realize, I have a family now.
