Ellie is a 13-year-old girl who is believed to be crazy, almost after the day she was born. It's gone to such an extent, that she herself believes that she is crazy, and embarks (with restraints) on a journey to find the truth.
I sat at the lunch table, Manny, like always, feeding me. She knew how much I was not too fond of it, being wrapped up like a burrito, hands, and legs tied to the chair so that I wouldn't run away, and she would try her best to make everything funny. It honestly never worked.
"Here comes the airplane!"
I turned my head away, ignoring a mouthful of god-knows-what. She looked at me with feigned anger and cursed in her best remake of her mother's British accent, which forced a snort out of me.
"Manny?"
I looked up to see Mama. Her eyes were red and tired, probably from crying after Dada left her. Manny got up and whispered something in her ear, which made her gasp and go white. She then looked at me with utter contempt, bitterness flowing through her once beautiful eyes. She started crying again, burying her pale face in her hands. Muttering reassurance, Manny gently led her across the fungal, dirty cafeteria and into the right hall, the only place I was scared to enter in my "HOME". After about 5 minutes, Manny came back, her red heels clanking on the checkerboard tiles placed in the cafeteria. She sat next to me, and her jolly mood disappeared.
"What did you say to Mama?"
Manny didn't reply, instead, she took the spoon with a forced smile.
I looked away from her, tears filling my eyes. Manny was going away. Her 3-month shift over, she'd be going back to her home, back to the twins she loved to talk to me about, back to her regular life that I, Ellie Mancaugh had ruined. I knew why Mama, had that disgusted look on her face, she thought I was the problem, that I was the reason Manny wanted to go.
"Is today the last day?"
Embarrassed, Manny looked away. I sighed and gave her the best of a 'hug' that I could give her. She hugged me back and kissed me on the forehead, her golden locks blocking my eyes.
"I'll write to you every day, and I'll send you lots of chocolates, just make sure you don't mess with the new girl like how you messed with me, she'd be extremely spooked!"
We laughed for a while, before Manny untied me and holding me firmly by the hand, walked to the right hall. Every inch of a step that I took towards the place scared me. I felt my hand shiver, my body ache, and my head spin. But I wanted to see Manny's family, so I walked with her. I closed my eyes tight and took in deep breaths, my hand was sweaty and I felt feverish... And then I felt normal. I opened my eyes to see daylight, sun streaming from real green trees, birds chirping out a lovely tune that broke my heart because I knew I would never be able to get out of my "HOME". Manny stopped and took a sharp right, where I saw her husband, Richard, and her two daughters May and April. As we walked closer to them, Richard took a step back and looked fearful, afraid, and disgusted by me.
"You go ahead Manny, I'll stay here and go back to my room, he clearly doesn't want me ruining your reunion"
My whisper didn't work. Manny took me towards Richard and introduced me to him, and her two daughters. It all happened so fast... By the time I ingested where Richard studied, They were sitting in the carriage waving goodbyes to me, and I was holding the hand of another human. She wiped away my tears and smiled at me.
"Shall we go back?"
