Chapter 5 of 14 - Just a Visit

I covered my face with a pillow. I couldn't go to sleep after what I saw out there. Abel couldn't have anything to do with that. I've known him for far too long. Benicio... I've never heard of a name so unique. I don't know what I'm going to do if I see him again. What if I get scared? What if I start asking questions? Does he know it was me? Why can't I get this out of my head?!... What if it wasn't him? I sat up and looked out the window. It was cold and cloudy. Usually, the stars are always shining on nights like this. I rested my head on the windowpane and watched as the cars drove by below me. My house is big, so it's pretty easy to find from down there. I couldn't help but bury my head in my arms and cry. I don't know why I'm so stressed. It's only my first day on the job. I sat there and cried for a couple of minutes. Suddenly, I felt a gust of wind against my face. Something landed on the window beside me. "Hey, Angel Cake." I jerked my head up and almost hit it on the top of the window. I almost fell out the window leaning over to see him. My hands cupped over my mouth, trying not to make a noise. "Abel?!" I cried. I moved out of the way so he could come in. "I'm sorry if this is too sudden..." He whispered. This was very sudden, very unexpected. I had no words. He looked so different now. Taller, thinner, and way more mature. He didn't look like a baby anymore. I didn't answer him. Instead, I just sat there looking stupid because I didn't know what to say. He noticed I was stumped on words. He held out his arms and smiled, "C'mon, (Y/N), bring it in." I leaned into his arms and hugged him so tight I didn't think he could breathe. "I missed you so much, Abel... You have no idea how lonely I've been since you left." I felt like I was going to cry even more, but I didn't want to in front of him. "I missed you, too... I'm sorry I've been gone so long. It was a sin to leave you behind like that." I felt a tear run down my shoulder. It sent a shiver down my spine. Was he was crying? . .. ... .. . You didn't want to let go, but you did anyway. You looked up at Abel and wiped his tears away. Abel smiled at you and took a deep breath. You could tell he was trying to hold back his tears. "I'm sorry you had to see me like this," he said, holding your hand. "I could say the same for myself," you replied. Abel chuckled, then looked at you for a second. "Why were you crying?" he asked. You were glad he cared about you still, after 16 years of you two being apart. "Well, I don't know if you have gotten my letters, but I just got a new job. It's supposed to be exciting and fun, ya know? I almost got ran over by a maniac shooting out the window of a car. He looked very familiar, which scares me." Abel looked slightly surprised, then he gave me a reassuring glance. "I heard about that. I have to say, word spreads fast around these parts. I'm sorry you had to go through all this... Hey, I wanted to ask," he said, perking up a little. "Why don't you come with me, I want to show you something." He jumped up and climbed out of the window. "Here, take my hand," he said, holding out his arm. You didn't know what he was going to do. You weren't sure if you should, but you didn't want to say no. You grabbed his hand and slowly stood up. "Hold on!" He said and jumped. He held you in his arms as you both flew for a few minutes. The wind became colder as he flew higher into the sky. It was scary, especially since you were afraid of heights. The clouds against your skin sent a shiver down your whole body. He flew straight into them and bolted out above them in a clear sky. After the flight was a little easier, you opened your eyes to see where you were. The sky was pitch black, but the stars made it look so bright. The moon was two times its regular size. It was the most beautiful thing you've ever seen. . .. ... .. . Nothing could've been as beautiful as this moment. Me seeing Abel for the first time in forever, flying over the clouds. What is he trying to accomplish out of this? Maybe he's trying to make up for his long absence. He came upon a cloud and stood on it while I was still holding onto him. I knew I was going to fall if I set foot on the cloud. He looked down at me and laughed. "It's fine, (Y/N), as long as I'm on the cloud, you can stand on it, too." I hung there for a moment until I found the courage to move. I didn't like the idea of standing on something that wasn't solid, but I trust Abel. I know he wouldn't do anything to hurt me. I slowly set foot on it, trying not to decapitate Abel's arms. I don't know why I'm so scared. It should be easy since I know I'm able to stand on it, but it's not because it's easier said than done. Abel didn't seem fazed by my nails digging into his arm. He just stood there waiting for me to let go. "Yep, just take your time," he said, mockingly. "We have hours." "Funny," I replied. I took my chances and tried to find my balance. The cloud was soft and comfortable, like millions of little feathers. He held my hand until I could stand again. I let go and wrapped my arms around myself. The stars shone like diamonds while the moon was still as big as ever. "This place is so beautiful... I never thought I'd be up here someday." I looked over at Abel, trying to pay attention to whatever he had to say, but he said nothing. He just kept his eyes at the sky. I could understand how awkward the situation must have been for him, especially since it's been so long since we've seen each other. He finally broke the silence. "Other than earlier, how's life been for you so far?" I sat up a little more and tried to think of something to say. My life has been great, but not so great. "It's been good, lots of new problems but what's life without them," I replied. "What about you?" . .. ... .. . "My life is an adventure. Always a corner to turn and a dead end to climb over. It's a journey to anywhere, nothin' close to holy ground, but that's something I'm gonna have to live with. But it would be a lot better with you by my side, ya know." You jerked your head to look at Abel. "You mean... come with you?" Abel put his hand on his knee, "Yep, I want you to be with me and the crew, do some uh... good work for others." You were confused, what crew? "What do you mean by 'crew'?" You waited for the angel to answer but all he did was stare back. He stood up and walked down the cloud. You weren't comfortable standing, so you watched him walk down. He turned around and patted his leg. "Come here! who's a good girl..." he said, trying to be funny. You weren't amused. "Really? Can you at least help me? I haven't been here as much as you have, ya know." He rolled his eyes, smirking. He strolled over to you and almost dragged you to your feet. You heald your breath, put one foot in front of another, and walked with him. You admired the scene and held Abel's arm. Suddenly, He grabbed you and held you tight. You both jetted through the clouds back into thin air. You were too scared to speak. You watched the ground get closer, but before you hit it, Abel swooped up and set you back in your room. You almost stumbled but Abel held you until the dizzyness lightened up a bit. He was still floating in the air, like a graceful swan from hell. "Y-you could have gone a little slower, right?" you stood, trembling. "Sorry, Angel Cake, I guess I didn't realize." He looked at me jokingly. You wanted to strangle him, but you could barely move. "Where are you going so soon?" You asked, still stunned and confused. "It's getting late, we both could get some sleep. We have a big day, tomorrow." We? Is he bringing me into this mess? "We? Where am I going?" Abel stood on the windowpane and came to your eye level. "Weren't you coming with me?" He stood there, almost looking determined. "Well, what am I going to do about my dad... and my job? I can't just leave them behind, ya know." Abel thought for a second. "Why don't I introduce you to the crew tomorrow, and maybe you can tell your dad that you're ready to move out or something... OH! You could tell him you got a new job! An extra one... maybe a volunteer? You can still keep your job, it could be useful!" You were surprised that Abel was trying so hard to get you to join him. You didn't want to say no, but you were excited, still, at the same time unsure. "I guess some of those could work, but it can't just happen like that. It takes time. I'm going to miss Dad more than you know..." He looked at me for a second then down at his feet. "I'll give you some time to consider, but, you can meet everyone tomorrow, right?" "Yeah, I can do that," I replied.
