Chapter 10 of 11 - Talking to the O'Donnell's

I sat down in the quaint room, McKenzie sat next to me. Alan sat on the floor, putting in a CD. I felt the awkwardness in the room, I tried to think of something to say. "So what does your dad do?" I asked. "He travels a lot for work, he won't be here until late August." "That sucks, does your mom work too?" "No," Alex said. "she died of a car accident a couple years ago." "I'm sorry to hear about that." McKenzie said softly. "What about you?" Alan asked. "What about your parents?" Me and McKenzie stared at each other, "Our parents... um they uh." "They are unable to take care of us at the moment." McKenzie said. "But the plan is to go back home when school starts." "Really?" Alex asked. "Why can't they they take care of you?" "That's a personal question." McKenzie said. "But if you must know we were forced to go into foster care." "Mac--" "There was an... invasion; and we were caught up in it." "An invasion?" Alex asked. "Like a home invasion?" "Yes." McKenzie said. "No." "What does that mean?" "It means that... we were targeted for human trafficking." McKenzie said slowly. I nodded. "Yeah, they're still investigating it. That's why we're doing this, there's a chance that we're not safe yet and until the case is closed we're in foster care." "That must have been terrible." Alan said concerned. "Do you mind to tell me what happened?" McKenzie shook her head, her knees pulled to her chest. "No, absolutely not." "MaKayla was taken first, and six days later I was; luckily, I left enough evidence for them to find us." "And you're staying here because... there's a chance that the people who took you are still out there." "They're still out there. They're still out there, and they won't stop until they catch us. They won't." "That's why the police are doing their job." I said softly. Alan sighed. "It looks like the rain has let up." The all of a sudden the door knocked, me and McKenzie flinched. Alex answered the door. "Good afternoon Mr. White." "Alex," Chris said. "I heard that Makayla and Scarlett were staying here for shelter." "That's right." he said. "I can take them home." Me and McKenzie stood up and walked outside. "It was nice meeting you Alex and Alan." I said. "You're welcome to join us for supper." Chris said. "Thank you," Alex said. "We'll think about it." "Alright," Chris said as he looked at me and McKenzie. "Let's go."
