Chapter 8 of 11 - Walking down the Hill

I sighed as I opened McKenzie's door. "Hey, it's me. Just wanted to check in on you." I saw McKenzie sitting on her window seat. "Have you taken your medicine?" "Does it matter?" "It matters to me." I answered. "I'm worried." "I'll take them," She answered, "just not now." "O-okay." I said. "I'm going outside to look around. Do you want to come with?" "Yeah sure," She said, "I'll be right down." "Okay." I walked in my room and packed my backpack with a book, a water bottle, and my new phone. I waited for McKenzie to come downstairs. When she did, we walked out the back door, the house was on a hill, it was steep, it was dense with trees and bushes. We trekked down the trails and attempted conversation. "So..." "So." "Do you have any plans for your birthday?" I frowned. "I haven't really thought about it." "Is there anything you want for your birthday?" I shrugged. "I'll let you know if I think of anything." McKenzie nodded, "All right." "How are things with you and Mark?" "Oh he broke up with me." I stopped climbing down, my heard dropped. "What?" I asked. "He didn't! He DID NOT." "He did." McKenzie said softly. "He didn't like the fact that I could read his mind. He didn't know how to deal with the PTSD-- which is okay. Most people don't know how to deal with that stuff. And it's okay, I'm fine with it I mean I'm okay with it because he was s--." She stopped for a moment and shook her head. "What's wrong?" "Nothing." She said softly. "No.... tell me." I said. "He was seeing someone else Sky." She said softly. "two days before our breakup. He was seeing someone else." "He did WHAT?" I asked. "How can he do that?" "I don't know" she asked. "But it's for the best." "He don't deserve you." I said angrily. "If I wasn't so far away I would shrink wrap his truck, key his truck, put mustard in his boots--" McKenzie chuckled. "That last one is going a little too far." "I can't believe he did that! His face seems so punchable now." "You've never punched anyone Sky." "Well, Mark could be the first." I said firmly. Eventually, we hiked down all the way down the hill and saw a lake. On the other side of the lake was a small house and dock. We sighed and sat at the end of the lake and took a deep breath. "Nice view." McKenzie said. "Yep," I said." "Almost makes you want to take another picture." "Ha ha." I said. "I've never asked how you are, how you dealt with your accident." "I'm fine." I said softly. "You don't sound convincing." I cleared my throat. "I still have nightmares, but other than that... I'm fine." McKenzie nodded. "I know how that is." I leaned back. "This is a good spot." McKenzie agreed. I squinted and looked closer at the standing water, then I looked up at the clouds. "It's about to rain. We should probably head back." McKenzie nodded in agreement. "Yeah." I helped her up and turned to climb up the small mountain and lost my breath. I saw a young man, holding a shotgun, it was pointed at us. "Who are you, and why are you at my house?"
