Chapter 1 of 4 - Tom and Scarlet

Hiya! I'm Sam, a 12 year old kid who lives with two foster parents and two foster siblings or at least for now. Who knows when I might get hauled off to a new family? But anyway, Over the few weeks I've been here I have heard rumors about a large seemingly haunted house on the corner of Sycamore and Elm street. Curiosity drew me closer and closer to the front gates where I saw a horrible sight. People, no, decaying bodies were lurking around the yard mindlessly. The moment they hear me gasp the gates swing open and suck me in. I scream helplessly as I try to get out back through the gate, my scarf swaying in the wind, but the 'zombies' are coming near. A ghost floats close to a door in the wall around the house. It beckons me to come to it. I edge around the wall to find the door. The ghost had disappeared. I open the door and walk through. The sight is...is...I honestly don't know what's going on. I close the door behind me. The room in front of me looks somewhat like a bedroom. However there are a few mysterious objects in an open trunk by the bed stand. I walk over to it and find a spork, a baguette, and a red pen. I tried writing with the pen, (which is clicked out.) but nothing happens. I set it down and pocket the dagger in case I might need it later. I pick back up the pen and click the back twice. A trap door falls open in the left corner of the room. A chair falls into it, and disappears. Forgetting all about the pen I walk over to the hole in the floor. I have no idea where the chair went, but I can clearly make out a staircase in the dim light. I walk down it slowly. The stairs transform into a long twisty slide. I grab the edge trying to stop, but the edge is sharp. I now have a two inch long cut on the palm of my left hand. Thankfully it isn't too deep so I take my scarf and wrap it around myhand, and a blinding light ahead of me appears to be coming closer. I reach the end and land on my head. Knocking me out cold. I wake up possibly hours later in a cold, dark, empty room. This room has a couch and a fireplace in it. Dang it I really wish I had brought my phone to call for help. I move on the couch, where I see the ghost again. It is smiling, I don't smile back. I look over to it and ask, “um, do you know where I might find a blanket?” I say, trying very hard not to make it angry. It nodded silently and drifted over to an orange bin with the word Scarlet on it. I open it to find two blankets one blue the other purple. The ghost attempts to start a fire, seeming to forget that it is dead, but eventually it blows on the fire and it starts crackling away. There is a moaning coming from the ceiling. Of course, it seems this is normal because the ghost seems in no way alarmed. There is a knocking at the door. The ghost smiles again and floats over to it. The door is ten opened by a small doll. “oh, hello,” she says kindly. I give her a small wave and don't say anything. Aren't talking moving dolls supposed to be evil? One more, a boy doll walks in after her. The two of them look to be family. “What's your name?'' they ask sweetly. I pause, “Sam,” I say quietly. “what's yours?” they stare at me for a moment. “No-one's ever asked that before…” Says the girl quietly, "well, better late than never I suppose! I'm Scarlet and this is Tom.” She adds beaming. “how do you do.” says Tom happily “I see you've already met Caroline.” The ghost waves at me. I nodded. There is silence for a moment, and I let go of the dagger. “Tom? Would you see about getting our guest some food? I think there was a baguette in my room” Says Scarlet, Tom rushes out of the room. A few minutes later Tom comes back with four plates and the baguette. “I got the baguette, but it seems one of the zombies has taken the spork again.” He tells her, sounding very annoyed “Really? That would make the third time this month!” adds Scarlet angrily. “You would think by now they would be more considerate to the masters things!” She keeps talking, but I don't hear it. 'The master' who could the master be? The ghost drifted over to me and swayed toward the spork. It doesn't have arms or leggs, and honestly it looks like some kid on halloween, the two bickering dolls look over at me. Caroline must have got there attention. “Sam?” says Scarlet, all emotion falling from her voice. Here we go, this is what I was expecting. “You wouldn't happen to know where the SPORK is would you?” I stand up, the blanket falls from around my shoulders, the dolls walk towards me. Well this is the end, and I never got to eat a bagel not once. Suddenly Scarlet jumps up to my shoulder and gives me a good hard noogie. Her china hand really hurts on my head. Tom fell down laughing. Caroline looks disappointed in their behavior. “Pfft!! Did you actually think we were gonna hurt you???” asked Tom who was still laughing uncontrollably “you should have seen the look on your face!!!” embarrassed, I picked up Scarlet and set her back on the floor. Caroline looks like if she had hands she would have just face palmed. She floats out of the room. I look at my watch, it's 3:14 pm. Scarlet grabs the spork and cuts the bread with it, Somehow... I put two pieces on each plate. The smell of fresh bread brings Caroline and a few more ghosts in. They eat faze through the bread on the fourth plate and then leave looking satisfied with themselves. We talk, eat bread, and laugh at pranks and jokes. However, there is soon a tapping on the door. “Come on in, James,” says Tom, seeming to recognize the tapping. A large spider crawls in and comes to sit between Tom and Scarlet. I stare at it, it stares back with its many eyes. “Are you two having a staring contest?” says a new voice. Three vampires fly in through the window and land on the ceiling. One is texting on her phone there other is fixing his hair and the last is watching us. “hey Karen, Robin, Shane.” Says Scarlet “It's good to see you. Where have you been? Sharon's been worried sick.” They all look at us, James crawls up on the ceiling with them and strings down so he's at eye level with them. Robin petts it. “Oh, yeah I guess mom would be a bit worried.” Says Karen “We've just been hanging with the zombies.” they come down from the ceiling “Well, see you guys for dinner” Says Shane, “word has it we're going to be having a picnic in the graveyard.” He smiles showing off his fangs “catch you on the flip side.” Says Robin flying out the door. James crawls back down. “So, what kind of place is this?” I ask curiously “Oh, have you ever seen the Addams Family?or Hotel Transylvania?” Scarlet asks “yeah, why?” I respond “well, it's kind of like a mix of those.” Tom nods “Oh, so this is some kind of hotel?” I ask confused “sort of, but it's only really for close friends and family. So, we're actually going to have to ask the master about your stay.” I think about this. I really like it here and I don't exactly have a family. I mean I have my foster parents, but there don't really know me that well. I decide that if I can stay I will, and I'll send a letter to them explaining that I won't be coming back anytime soon. I'm sure they'll understand, but for now, WHO THE HECK IS THE MASTER???
