Chapter 4 of 6 - ---

"Welcome to camp Cross. My name is Gregory Smith but I prefer to be called Smith. I am the head and founder of Camp Cross. I had this underground camp built about 18 years ago." He stopped and looked up at a painting of Zeus that was hanging on the wall. He brought his gaze back to me and spoke, "Have you noticed anything strange and unusual about yourself, maybe something that happened after your 13th birthday?" "Actually yes, a lot of things. Events and incidents that I can't explain." "In your case that's normal." "What do you mean?" I asked with a surprised look on my face. "Do you know what the four elements are?" I thought for a minute and nodded and head. I had learned about them back in 5th grade during the unit on the Greek's and Roman's. "Fire, Water, Earth and Air." "Very good. Here at Camp Cross we train you physically and mentally. There are Staff here to train you, feed you and look after you. There are also guards in case of emergencies and also for security purposes. I have three very important rules 1) don't try to escape 2) Listen to the leaders, staff and guards 3) don't purposely use your powers unless strictly told too. Any questions?" I almost sat down on the floor. This was all so much to take in. I had so many questions. "How am I going to know my way around?" "Zen will give you a tour. He is the martial arts and standard combat and defense teacher, explained Smith. A minute later the door opened and a muscular Asian man entered. He was wearing an undershirt and sweatpants. He nodded at Smith and beckoned me to follow him. We walked down a hallway and turned a corner. Zen stopped at a blue door on the right side of the wall. He turned to face me, "This door opens to the weight room. You will have 2 regular sessions a week here with Mr.Steel but it is open during your free time." I walked further down the hallway and came upon a yellow door, "This is my training room in which you will be introduced to martial arts and self defense. You will have my sessions every day." Zen walked down the hallway and led him around a corner. I saw big brown double doors about 10 yards away. Zen stopped at the doors and opened them. He spoke as he went into the room, "This is the dining hall. You will have all your meals here. "Why are the tables like that?" "There are four long tables, each one for either element." I gawked at the big room. There were chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and beautiful paintings on either wall. There were several doors on the far side of the room to which he assumed led to the kitchen. Zen showed me several other rooms; laundry room, medical center, armoury, movie theatre and recreation area. There were specific clothes and uniforms they had to wear. We passed several other kids and adults, many of them clumped in groups. "You will do all activities with your dorm mates. Each dorm room holds about 15 to 20 occupants. You will have a leader for your dorm room." "How will I know which element I am?" I asked, still spectacle. "You will be tested in the examination room." I stared at him, suddenly feeling uneasy. Seeing my wide eyes, Zen reassured him, "It won't take long. You won't feel a thing, You will just be hooked up to a MRI machine. We will scan your body and that will help us determine what element you are." I tried changing the subject, "Why is it called Camp Cross?" "The camp was designed to look like a cross. There is a north, south, east and west wing. Each wing corresponds to one of the elements. Instead of calling them fire, water, air and earth powers, we call the abilities pyrokinesis which is fire, hydrokinesis which is water, aerokinesis which is air and geokinesis which is Earth. Someone who can control and manipulate any of the elements is called a bender." "Which of the elements is the most powerful?" "Strength and ability is not determined by the element but by the benders themselves. Control, practice, experience and other factors determine how strong the bender or element is." "Mmm, okay" "Let's get you to the examination room, Zen said and turned around.
