I usually walked home since my house was a short distance from the school. The house was a big brick one located at the corner of Maple street. I walked up the stone path and unlocked the front door. I stepped into the foyer and turned on the lights. My parents weren't home yet; my mother was at the nearby hospital and my father was working at the law firm. I trod up the steps and went to my bedroom.
I knew that my parents hated leaving me home alone because they didn't want to come home with the house flooded or burned to the ground.
I set down my things on the hardwood floor and walked over to my bed to take a short nap.
A few hours later I lay on my bed playing on my Xbox while aimlessly thinking. A couple of days ago I had overheard my parents discussing the possibility of sending me to a boarding school. I didn't fucking care at this point.
My parents usually both came home around the same time. More often than not they ate take out. I put down his Xbox controller and walked to the hall bathroom. I took a quick piss, flushed the toilet and turned to face the mirror. My hair was all over the place from laying on the bed. I opened the medicine cabinet and reached inside, retrieving the comb. I combed my hair until it was back in order and walked back to my bedroom. I powered on the Xbox and immersed myself back into Call of Duty.
After a while I got bored so I shut off my Xbox. I opened the bedroom window and looked out as the sun started its descent behind the horizon. The California air had cooled dramatically. My parents had always complained about the heat but I didn't really mind it.
I slid the window back down and went downstairs hearing my mother call that dinner was ready. spaghetti and salad was set on the table. They all sat down seemingly forgetting to pray. It was quiet for a while with just the sounds of clinking utensils and the moving of cups and plates. My parents were glancing at each other every five seconds whenever they thought I wasn't looking. I pretended not to notice; pushing food around my plate.
The silence must've gotten unbearable because Mr. Heater took one last look at his wife and spoke, "Jason, me and your mother talked and decided that it might be best if you attended a boarding school; the one in West Wood County. Things have been a little crazy around here and we want what's best for you.
"Okay," I mumbled, not meeting their eyes.
"It will only be for a little while," announced his mother, but they both knew that was a lie.
That night I lay in bed staring up at the ceiling, thinking about how crazy my life was and how I had ever gotten in this mess. Eventually, I closed my eyes and fell asleep.
I woke up suddenly, sure that I had heard something. Then as if on cue there came a loud thumping of footsteps followed by chasing and muffled screams. I threw back the covers, put on a shirt and rushed out of the room still a little sleepy. I stumbled down the stairs and blindly fiddled my hands on the wall until I found the light switch and quickly flipped on the lights. What I saw almost stopped my heart.
There on the floor was blood...everywhere. It had trailed down the steps. I glanced around the room more until I saw my parents lying on the floor, deprived of life and covered in blood.
Suddenly I felt a tight arm around his chest and a quick prick on his neck. He didn't even fight it; shock had overcome me. I felt light and woozy. I fell to the floor and everything went black.
